LEGNANO – A granite stele with on top the silhouette of Monte Rosa, to recall the origins of the Corps as a border guard; on the front, the distinctive flame frieze with a dedication to the Fallen and a verse from the financier’s prayer; and on the back the heraldic coat of arms of the Corps with the three elements of mountain (to symbolize the earth) sea sky and the verse of the national anthem which mentions Legnano. It is the monument to the fallen of the Guardia di Finanza in times of war and peace, the work of the artist Francesco Muranoinaugurated today, Thursday 13 June, in the public park in via dei Bambini (in the pictures) in the presence of civil, military and religious authorities in the context of the celebrations of 250th anniversary of the founding of the Corps.
During the ceremony, which concluded with the laying of wreaths and the reading of the financier’s prayer, the Jubilate choir sang the national anthem during the flag raising and the provincial commander of the Gdf of Milan, brigadier general, spoke. Radice: «Symbol of commitment to legality»
The inevitable homage, in Mazzotta’s first speech, to Luca Piani, Alessandro Pozzi And Simone Giacomelli, the three financiers who died in Val Masino during an exercise last May 29th. «This monument – said the commander of the province of Milan – is the result of the initiative promoted by Mayor Radice a tangible symbol for civil society and especially for young people of the gratitude we owe to all the Fallen of our Corps in the name of the ideals of justice, freedom and altruism.” The general then traced a historical excursus remembering some of those who fell in service during the two world wars as in the 1930s and in times closer to us.
In Legnano, whose Group is today commanded by lieutenant colonel Biagio Maurizio Agostathe Financial Police is present since 1 October 1931. «A historical presence – Radice recalled – which allows with its men and women to help our territory grow healthily with its supervision, presence at major events and commitment to 360-degree legality, which includes the agreement made on contracts financed by the Pnrr. In the monument that we discover today – continued the mayor – I read two other meanings: the “significance” of the territory, in the sense that this area opened in 2009 struggled to become one of the lived-in places of the city and it needs to be enriched with meaning. For this purpose we have named a square after the president of the Legnanese family Luigi Caironi and the park to children victims of the mafia. It is important to find community pieces like these in these places. And then I’ll read you the symbol of cooperation and collaboration between institutionswhich is a specific character of our city to contribute to the common good.”
«They were days full of emotion – admitted General Arbore (above) referring to the recent loss of the three young financiers – I stayed very struck by the composure with which their families experienced this painunited in underlining the belonging of their boys to one of the Corps that operate in the service of the homeland” while Monsignor Raimondi spoke of “a glorious account of even a recent past. The sense of belonging to the Corps has a strong presence here which pursues legality every day without making any noise. May this monument be a warning that this commitment never goes out of fashion, and a memory of those who fell for it.”
