Foligno: local healthcare in danger due to transfer of nurses

Last week, during the last speech of the electoral campaign, I expressed my concern about a decision that I consider harmful, taken by the Region and accepted by the mayor of Foligno without any objection. This decision directly concerns the citizens of Foligno.

This involves the transfer of 11 nurses, of which 9 from Foligno and 2 from Spello, who were in charge of home services. These nurses were transferred to the Territorial Operations Center of Spoleto, leaving only 4 operators to manage the 1,500 patients in Foligno who require home care. Among these patients, many suffer from serious illnesses and disabilities.

This is not the first case in which the resources of the Foligno health district are used to strengthen services in other areas. The decision, taken on 4 June by the General Director of the Umbria 2 Local Health Authority, Piero Carsili, has already been implemented, with the nurses having been recalled for training for the new position in Spoleto.

The situation is made even more serious by the fact that the Local Health Authority has asked the nurses themselves to inform patients that they will no longer be able to assist as before. This raises a number of questions: Who will care for these patients at home? How will this blockage of the continuity of care service with the hospital for home therapies be resolved?

The municipal administration has not yet taken a position on the matter. For this reason, I invite all citizens to express their indignation. The protests of the inhabitants of Spoleto and local politics have achieved results in the protection of the right to health in those territories. It’s time to join forces to protect what remains of a healthcare system that has been put to the test.

It’s time for the city to make itself heard. We can no longer allow other services to be strengthened at the expense of Foligno, which has already been deprived of its community home and community hospital. Whoever has governed until now could have prevented it. A true mayor would do everything to protect the health of his territory.

We have already brought this issue to the attention of all the press, we have alerted the unions and we are ready to take to the streets in the next few days together with healthcare workers. We will continue to fight until the end, because the violation of the right to health of the citizens of Foligno has become unsustainable and Foligno cannot be the health ATM of the Umbria Region.
