PORTO SANT’ELPIDIO – Hail as if it were snow, wind and a drastic drop in temperatures. Bad weather sweeps the Marche region transforming a mid-June day into an autumn one. A violent hailstorm, mixed with rain, hit the Fermo area in the early afternoon of today, particularly in the municipalities of Fermo, Porto San Giorgio and Porto Sant’Elpidio.
Precisely in the latter, the mayor Massimiliano Ciarpella brought together the Coc, the municipal operations centre, with the civil protection, supported by the local police. Alleys and streets were flooded with rainwater, so much so that firefighters began to intervene. Various access roads are closed, the most affected streets for the moment are via XX Settembre, via San Francesco d’Assisi, the central seafront. The underpass in Piazza Garibaldi was flooded: blocked by water and hail: it is still early to assess the damage. Civil protection workers, municipal workers, the technical office, volunteers, firefighters, the regional operations room, the prefecture are involved.
In Fermo, the asphalt was damaged in various parts of the city and cobblestones were blown out in the historic centre. Several fallen trees also resulted in calls requesting intervention from the fire brigade.
The mayor of Fermo, Paolo Calcinaro, went to the points where the greatest critical issues were reported: “The violent hailstorm blew away the cobblestones and also the asphalt, from the pipes underneath, in various areas of the city, especially those with roads sloping. The Region contacted me warning me that there was a violent storm “cell” right in Fermo, Porto Sant’Elpidio. We are working to verify the extent of the damage”
