Robotic pediatric surgery, two extraordinary operations at the Ruggi Hospital in Salerno

First two robotic pediatric surgeries at the San Giovanni di Dio and Ruggi d’Aragona university hospitals in Salerno thanks to the team of doctor Umberto Ferrentino, director of Pediatric Surgery at Ruggi.

“It was a difficult achievement, on a tortuous pathexplained director Ferrentinoa long training course that led us to an amazing result, made possible thanks to the synergy and cooperation between specialist doctors, nurses and social health workers who guaranteed the necessary assistance in each distinct phase, always supported by the Strategic Management of Ruggi which focused on raising the parameters of safety and quality, perfecting the performance of the pediatric surgeon through the use of robotics”.

Thanks to the long-standing collaboration between Ruggi’s Pediatric Surgery and Professor Ciro Esposito, Director of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Naples Federico ll, Regional Pediatric Robotic Surgery Reference Center, the two operations were performed, one of which allowed the correction of an extremely rare malformation of the urinary tract.

The patient, aged 14, had an obstruction of the major calyces of the right kidney which appeared to be extrarenal and compressed by the renal vein, so much so as to compromise the physiological outflow of urine.

“Robotics technology has allowed us to reach where it would have been impossible to reachDoctor Ferrentino further explained -. A better effectiveness of the manipulation of the structures during the surgical procedure allowed us to isolate the obstructed calyces and suspend the vessel, so that the urine could regain its way towards the bladder, with a method that can be used in children without added risks”. The operation in question was a perfect success, the boy is in excellent health.
