Reggio Calabria, Mediterranean youth at the “Med youth meeting 2024”

Migration, mobility, women’s rights and a construction site towards young people. These are the themes for which Reggio will become the cradle of the Mediterranean in the coming days. Presented at Palazzo San Giorgio “Med youth meeting 2024”, seventh edition of the international meeting of young people from the Mediterranean, organized by Med Youth Network with the support of REF (Réseau Euromed France) in close collaboration with Mana Chuma Theatre.
Until June 15, around 80 young people from 17 countries in the Mediterranean basin and involved in civil society will meet in Reggio to discuss issues such asemployment and professional trainingcivic participation, migration and mobility, social and climate justice, freedom of expression and creation.

The initiatives were supported by Municipality of Reggio, Mediterranean University and Archaeological Museum to raise awareness of the city’s heritage. The Administration organized a guided tour of the Civic Art Gallery and other cultural attractions of the area.

An important event in view of Erasmus Plus which will be hosted in the city of the Strait next year. The Councilor for Education and University brought the greetings and welcomed the municipal administration Anna Briante.

The council member highlighted:

“The mayor welcomed this initiative with great pleasure because talking about the Med youth meeting in 2024 in Reggio Calabria means being in the heart of the Mediterranean. Our city is right in the center and this makes us proud, but it also puts us face to face with responsibility because the Mediterranean is talked about a lot positively, but also negatively. We should be able to seize all the opportunities that this strategic position allows us and we hope to be up to the task. Nothing is simple in this society especially for young people. The work of the REF is important because it talks about self-determination of individuals, women and entire populations. A starting point from which we would like to begin to collect the requests of the young people involved in the initiatives and then translate them into concrete administrative actions”.

Massimo Barilla of Mana Chuma clarified the meaning of these projects in Reggio, a return to the origins:

“We are not only a recognized company, which tours Europe and beyond continental borders, but it is very important to bring this work back from the DNA of Mana Chuma that comes from territorial projects, a youth center on the outskirts of Reggio, it is essential to reflect the path accumulated in recent years in the territory: catalyzing international relations, embodying the central role of Reggio in the Mediterranean which is a responsibility but also an opportunity. We will then be the bottom-up glue between the institutions and the social world.”
