The Volunteers of the Municipality of Alessandria with the “Let’s Make Peace” Project
raise awareness of bullying among middle school students in Alessandria
The volunteers of the “Let’s Make Peace” project of the first edition of the Regional Civil Service 2023/2024 who pursue the objective of the call aimed at developing useful actions to prevent youth discomfort, have recently conducted awareness-raising interventions on the topic of bullying in middle schools of Alexandria.
Some meetings saw the volunteers Giulia Colaianni, Giulia Foglino, Andrea Emanuelli and Firas Tabai active at the “Vittorio Alfieri” secondary schools in Spinetta Marengo and “Bovio-Cavour” in Alessandria, in which they actively involved the students with questions on the meaning of word “bullying”, on their personal experiences and on local places perceived as potentially dangerous.
Taking inspiration from a module of their training course, they proposed two stories of true stories of victims of bullying: the first recited by the volunteers and the second by the students themselves; texts selected to reflect on the different forms of bullying and its emotional and social consequences. Subsequently, a short film created and performed by the volunteers was screened to offer practical advice and useful contacts in order to deal with situations of both physical and verbal bullying; the video is enriched by statistical data, with an adequate soundtrack.
Finally, the volunteers of the Regional Civil Service delivered a useful tool, a gift they designed and built to help very young people: each class was given a list of useful numbers, mentioned in the video, and some “secret thought boxes” ; a way to help more reserved students to report, even anonymously, any cases of discomfort, by inserting notes inside the boxes.
The initiative has attracted attention, indeed a keen interest among students and has undoubtedly strengthened the sense of school community, in this case united against bullying.
The Municipal Administration expressed satisfaction with this action and thanks the volunteers of the Regional Civil Service who support the community by dedicating themselves to the development of the project for their commitment and seriousness. Their work will continue until September 2024 and they will be engaged in other activities useful for intercepting young people at risk of marginalization and/or young people who do not suffer from specific difficulties, but still risk social isolation; during the summer they will be protagonists, together with the project partner organisation, the Yggdra association, in the organization of one or more events dedicated to the youth population.
