applications growing for the fifth consecutive year

Requests for early admission are also increasing for the new academic year (+28%). The high quality of the training offer counteracts emigration and competition from online universities

The attractiveness of the University of Calabria is constantly growing. This is demonstrated, once again, by the applications for participation in the call for early admission to three-year and single-cycle degree courses for 2024/2025 which show a truly considerable figure: 28% more students compared to the previous academic year, which in turn had recorded an increase of 31% on the 2022/2023 numbers.

“Plus” sign for the fifth consecutive year. After more than a decade of decline in enrollments until 2019/20, for the fifth consecutive year since the appointment of rector Nicola Leone, Unical is improving its numbers. Last year 2,252 applications for early admission were received, correctly accompanied by the certificate obtained with the TOLC (Cisia online test), while this year there are 2,873. An increase of 621 students, equal to 28%; while compared to 2019/20, the year the current rectoral mandate began, applications more than doubled, with an increase of 1,628 students, equal to 131% more.

Applications for enrollment in almost all three-year and single-cycle degree courses which require early admission are rising: among the most requested are Computer Engineering with 291 applications, Business Economics (189), Computer Science (187), Management Engineering (185), Humanities and cultural heritage and Mechanical engineering (151).

Unical against the current. Numbers in absolute contrast with the national picture and, in particular, with respect to the dramatic predictions on the future of the universities of Southern Italy. Suffice it to say that from 2011 to 2021 the universities of the South have lost over 100 thousand students (Anvur data) and that – due to the demographic decline and emigration – according to the latest Svimez report, by 2041 there could be a further drop of 27 % of those enrolled in the South.

And if the fight against the possible decline in enrollments also involves strengthening international attractiveness, it is worth highlighting the data on applications from non-EU students which reach 154 (with a growth of 157% compared to last year).

Quality and in-person training is rewarded. «More and more young people are choosing Unical as a place of university study, – comments Rector Leone – for the quality of a constantly updated training offer and the many opportunities offered by our campus. The 28% growth in applications for early admission, compared to 2023/2024, and even 131% in comparison with the first year of my rectoral mandate, fills us with confidence, awaiting the definitive data on enrollments which will arrive at the end of the two subsequent admission phases”.

Certainly less exposed to the country’s demographic decline and negative migratory flows are the online universities, which according to the latest report produced by the Mediobanca Research Area have recorded an enormous growth in enrollments in the last twelve years. «I am convinced that the education of online universities – comments the Rector – which is received through a computer screen, without the possibility of comparison, is not comparable to that of in-person universities. The true nature of university education cannot ignore direct and daily human interaction with teachers and other students. It is in this way, through comparison and socio-cultural relationships, that critical consciousness is formed and the protagonists of the future are forged, capable of facing the challenges of a continually evolving society.”

Standard admission. Those who are unable to enter a three-year, single-cycle degree course in this first phase will still be able to participate in the standard admission process, the announcement for which will be published at the end of June in the dedicated section of the university portal.

For all courses, the TOLC necessary to draw up the rankings to select those admitted in case of saturation of the places available will be required. But the test is first and foremost a tool for verifying the possession of adequate initial preparation. Any verification of the presence of gaps will result in the assignment of additional training obligations (OFA) which can in any case be extinguished by following the pre-courses provided by the university in September and passing the relevant exam. Candidates who do not take the TOLC will be placed at the end of the ranking with the assignment of the minimum score for the test and the assignment of all the required training obligations.

Master degree. The early admission phase for Unical’s master’s degree courses is already open. Students who do not yet have the entrance qualification, but who will obtain it by the 2023/2024 academic year (before the three-year degree it will not be possible to take master’s exams) can also participate. Unical thus intends to guarantee its students full continuity of their study path, avoiding the delays and interruptions that could arise in the transition from a three-year degree to a master’s degree.

The training offer is very broad, with 38 courses of which 10 are delivered entirely in English, which strengthens the international vocation of the University of Calabria. To encourage the enrollment of European and non-regional students, access to these courses will be regulated through online interviews.
