Cinema in the square in Bologna: programme, dates and guests

Bologna, 10 June 2024 – Summer, a Bolognarhymes with cinema. In fact, one of the most anticipated events in the city is back, the Cinema Ritrovatowhich from June 22nd to 30th will transport spectators back in time.

Now in its 38th edition, the event organized by Cineteca di Bologna will bring 480 films in 9 days to cinephiles in Bologna and beyond. A feast of films and a leap into the past, given that the objective of ‘Cinema Ritrovato’ is to re-propose films that have made the history of world cinema in a restored format.

Nine days of screenings, from morning to evening, in 8 theaters and 3 outdoor locations in the city: at the Cinema Modernissimo, Sala Scorsese and Sala Mastroianni at the Cinema Lumière, Auditorium – DamsLab, Cinema Jolly, Cinema Arlecchino, Cinema Europa, Sala Cervi. And then every evening in Piazza Maggioreeven atPuccini Arena and four special evenings, always outdoors, in Piazzetta Pasolini.

At the ‘Renzo Renzi’ Library, the appointment with the publishing fair dedicated to cinematographic publications is renewed, which this year brings together 70 publishers. And then meetings at Main Auditorium.

This year, for the first time, the Cinema Ritrovato will also be at Very modern cinemathe “rediscovered” room, an underground treasure chest in the heart of Bologna, under Piazza Maggiore, returned to its original early twentieth-century beauty: screenings here from 18 June to experience the emotion of the great films restored in Piazza Maggiore until 7 July .

Among foreign guests Damien Chazelle (director of La La Land And Whiplash) will present in Bologna Les Parapluies de Cherbourg Of Jacques Demy (which inspired La La Land) and his most recent Babylonhomage to the legendary era of silent cinema; Wim Wenders with his Paris, Texas, The Skladanowsky brothers And Buena Vista Social Club and the classics of John Ford, Anthony Mann And Yasujiro Ozu; Darren Aronofsky And Amadeus by Miloš Forman; Alexander Payne with his The Holdovers and the Marcel Pagnol film that inspired him, Merlusse; Volker Schlöndorff with his Homo Faber and The Blue Angel by Joseph von Sternberg with Marlene Dietrich. Own Marlene Dietrich will be at the center of one of the many retrospectives, including the one dedicated to Pietro Germi 50 years after his death, and the one to another great female figure, Delphine Seyrig. A program also dedicated to the discovery of important directors such as the American (but of Ukrainian origins) Anatole Litvakcapable of crossing, with his long filmography, 40 years of cinema history, and the Swede Gustaf Molander, discoverer of divas like Ingrid Bergman.

Among the restorations in Piazza Maggiore there is also the legendary International Intrigue Alfred Hitchcockstarring Gary Grant: appointment on June 18th at 9.45pm to see the iconic plane scene again, this time under the stars.

One of the rites most loved by Bolognese and tourists also returns, capable of filling and enlightening Piazza Maggiore every summer evening. From June 17th to August 15th in fact, ‘Under the cinema stars’ is on stage, with 50 films with free admission from 9.45pm.
