Matteoli REMEMBERS Cagliari: «Very nice experience, in Ranieri’s place I would have seen well…” The ex’s words

Interviewed in the columns of The Passion of Footballthe former CagliariGianfranco Matteoli, spoke about his past in Sardinia and the current period of the rossoblù. His words:

EXPERIENCE IN CAGLIARI- «Cagliari was a very nice experience. I arrived with Ranieri in Serie A and we did very well. The first season, despite playing excellent football, we weren’t able to score points, but then we had a great second round and saved ourselves. The following year with Mazzone (1991/92), having a good championship and then in the following season, again with Mazzone we qualified for the UEFA Cup. So in the ’93/’94 season with coach Bruno Giorgi who I remember as a great leader, I will always carry him in my heart, because he was like a father, an exceptional person from all points of view and also made us play well.»

NEW COACH «Although I don’t deal with these situations and don’t know the connected dynamics well, I would still tell you that, on the Cagliari bench, I would have seen very well Marco Baroni who has now already found his new place, because he is a serious person, a coach who knows what he is doing. Ranieri was fundamental for Cagliari, beyond his skill as a coach, because he managed to keep not only the team, but also the club upright, in a very delicate moment. Only he could keep the fans under control and create an environment suitable for safety, he brought everyone together, he was fundamental! The problem for those who come to Cagliari, in my opinion, will be precisely this, understanding where a great job really needs to be done, because after Ranieri’s departure it becomes really difficult to manage everything.»
