Expired blood products regularly stored and suddenly disappeared, then cataloged in the registers as «not found». But, between the expiry date and the disappearance, virtually available on the platform both for the patients of the San Giovanni di Dio and Ruggi d’Aragona hospitals and for those of the Santa Maria Incoronata dell’Olmo di Cava de’ Tirreni and Fucito of Mercato San Severino.
After the inspection by the medical management of Ruggi, which took place last October, it is now gaining ground also the investigation by the Salerno prosecutor’s office. The file, followed personally by the chief prosecutor Giuseppe Borrelli, concerns blood bags not found starting from 2021 and up to 2023. And under the magnifying glass of the Nas carabinieri of Salerno, there would be two registers for noting the bags and also the system for uploading the data onto an IT platform . Irregularities which the magistrates now intend to look at clearly as it cannot be ruled out that these bags may have been used, despite the expiry date, or disposed of irregularly. All to the detriment of patients.
Above all, the judiciary intends to see things clearly on the wording “not found” indicated in the cataloging folders of blood products. Also because, in some cases, the suspicion is that incorrect justifications would have been given regarding the reason for disposal, often inappropriate as they are linked to blood problems. In short, it would have been indicated that the blood products would have had irregular values which should instead have been analyzed in the days immediately following the blood collection and, therefore, officially validated.
It would seem strange that validated blood bags are suddenly unsuitable due to alterations. One of two things: either the checks were not carried out well at the time of collection, or the justification is incorrect. At the moment the investigations remain confidential also because we are trying to clarify the procedures adopted for the cataloging and conservation of the bags to then identify any responsibilities. The “pockets of mystery” would concern different blood groups (A; B; AB; O; RH positive and negative), some of type 0, however, would be transfused (with subsequent annotation) into other devices according to indications in the registers which, according to initial checks, are not completely exhaustive.
In short, opaque conduct that could also put health at risk of patients and on which each of the managers, according to their own skills, will now have to give answers. Procedures are also under scrutiny. “Not found” is a note which, in the case of public health, should raise some doubts and require answers.
There would also be another report made in recent weeks to the Nas Salerno which would specifically concern blood tests: test tubes with samples that would be brought from outside to the emergency room to be analyzed and which would be from people who had never been through hospital triage. Often even relatives of the staff. But, on this matter, at the moment there would only be verbal complaints.
