Background

Inaugurated on December 13, 2017, the library has history and origins closely linked to Civic Museum of Reggio, established way back in 1882, at the time located in the rooms on the ground floor of the archbishop’s palace of Reggio Calabria. From a small collection of books, the result of bequests and donations, in 1932, with the construction of the National Museum in the current location of Palazzo Piacentini, the assets were increased at the instigation of the superintendents succeeded with books onclassical archeology in collaboration with the university library of Messina.

The book heritage

A heritage of approximately 25 thousand volumes, some even rare and ancient. There are many subjects that can be studied in depth: ethnology, history of religions, mythology, excavation techniques, restoration, subsidiary sciences, cultural heritage, ceramics, Greek and Latin classics, corpus vasorum antiquorum, ancient architecture and topography, epigraphy, Greek and Roman institutions, philology, literature, Greek and Latin philosophy, Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean, ancient history, Italy and the Roman West, history of medieval and modern art, bibliographies, linguistics, glottology, Magna Graecia, numismatics and metrology, preparatory studies, general works, iconography, prehistory, monographs and periodicals on painting and mosaic, Christian and medieval archaeology.

Without neglecting culture, encyclopedias and dictionaries of antiquities, minor arts, Egypt and the Orient, linguistic dictionaries, conference proceedings, local publications, medieval and modern literature and history.

The heritage is also enriched by the Barresi fundcomposed of 3190 volumes, including Greek and Latin classics and precious volumes, as unique copies in southern Italy.
