Every day, Veneto contributes with 538 million euros to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Italy. This data represents the sum of final goods and services produced by Veneto companies, companies from other Italian regions and foreign production companies present in our region. In per capita terms, each Venetian citizen, including newborns and over centenarians, contributes almost 111 euros to the daily GDP. This value is higher than the Italian average, which stands at 99 euros per inhabitant.

The regional differences are evident: in Trentino Alto Adige, the daily GDP per inhabitant is 146 euros, in Lombardy 131.8 euros, in Valle d’Aosta 130.1 euros, in Emilia Romagna 118.9 euros and in Veneto 110, 8 euros. On the contrary, in Campania the daily GDP per capita is 63.4 euros, in Sicily 60.1 euros and in Calabria 57.9 euros.

The comparison with other European Union countries reveals a significant gap, especially compared to Northern European countries. In Luxembourg, the daily wealth per inhabitant is 336 euros, in Ireland 266 euros, in Denmark 179 euros, in the Netherlands 164 euros, in Austria 149 euros, in Sweden 145 euros and in Belgium 140 euros. Among the 27 EU countries, Italy ranks 12th.

Until the 1980s, Italy was among the European and world leaders in sectors such as chemicals, plastics, rubber, steel, aluminium, IT, automobiles and pharmaceuticals. Large public and private companies guaranteed employment, research, development, innovation and productive investments. However, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the “Tangentopoli” scandal put many state-owned companies in difficulty, leading to their almost total disappearance.

Despite these difficulties, Italy has remained among the most economically advanced countries in the world thanks to its SMEs, which continue to compete successfully in international markets. In terms of labor productivity, measured by comparing the value added to the standard work units (AWU), in 2024 the average Italian figure is equal to 77 thousand euros for ULAor 211 euros on average per day.

In terms of added value, the most virtuous province of Veneto is Padua, with 35.6 billion euros of added value, 478 thousand AWUs and an annual labor productivity of 74,533 euros. Verona and Vicenza follow with added values of 34.6 billion and 33.4 billion euros, respectively. Vicenza leads the regional ranking for labor productivity with 230.2 euros per AWU per day, followed by Treviso (225.8 euros), Belluno (218 euros) and Venice (206.8 euros).
