The turnout for the municipal elections in Avellino was 36.67% at 12pm on 9 June. The investigating judge authorized former mayor Festa to go to the polling station to vote.

Turnout at 36.67% ad Avellino for them 2024 municipal elections to elect the new mayor and the new city council, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior (72 sections out of 72 received), updated at 12.00 today, Sunday 9 June, second day of voting. The local elections are taking place at the same time as the European ones, as part of Election Day. Last night, in the city of Avellino the turnout had closed at 24.17% at 11.00 pm. Other data on turnout will be communicated at 7pm and 11pm. Even today the polling stations will remain open until 11pm. The counting of votes will begin immediately afterwards.

There are 42 municipalities voting in the province of Avellino, including the capital of Irpinia. Among the major ones also include Montoro (19,396 inhabitants) e Mercogliano (11,635 inhabitants). In the previous electoral round, that of 2019, voting was held for only one day, May 26th. Taking into account the progressive readings and not the time, the turnout in the previous elections was 17.30% (data recorded at 12pm on Sunday 26 May); the total turnout, recorded at 11pm, was 71.7% (equal to 33,381 voters out of a total of 46,557 eligible voters).

The former mayor Festa was placed under house arrest

In the last elections, Gianluca Festa was elected, currently under house arrest as part of an investigation into municipal procurement. The outgoing former mayor was arrested on 18 April. Last March 26th he submitted his resignation, which became effective on April 16th, and at the same time the Prefect appointed a commissioner. Today Festa went to vote in the municipal and European elections. The Investigating judge of the Court of Avellino accepted his request, authorizing him to go to the polling station, where Festa went on foot this morning at 7, also greeting the president and members of the electoral office. At the end of the vote he returned home.

The previous administration had also ended with a commissionership, but after just four months: Vincenzo Ciampi had been in office from July to November 2018; the elections were held on 10 June 2018, the turnout at 11pm was 71.2 of those entitled to vote.

7 mayoral candidates are running

Since Avellino has a population greater than 15 thousand inhabitants, if none of the candidates obtain an absolute majority in the first round there will be a run-off. There are seven mayoral candidates:

  • Laura Nargi (Really, We are Avellino, Long live Freedom)
  • Gennaro Romei (Central Union)
