Voter turnout: Varese disappoints, Lombardy challenges the national average

On the first day of voting in the European and administrative elections, Varese recorded a low turnout, with only 14.64% of voters. However, some municipalities such as Duno stand out for a higher participation, while Lombardy stands at around 16% overall

The first hours of voting in the European and local elections in the province of Varese raised fears of a lukewarm participation, but the numbers surprised with their low percentage. From 3pm to 11pm on Saturday 8 June, only 14.64% of those entitled to vote for the European elections, but this percentage grows slightly at 18% if we consider only the preference for local electionsinvolving 77 municipalities in the area.

Municipalities with the highest participation

However, some municipalities recorded higher than average participation. Duno stands out for a voter percentage of 33%, while a Malnate, one of the three municipalities with over 15,000 inhabitants, the turnout was 17.84% for the European elections and 17.49% for the local elections. Samarate, another large municipality called to double elections, recorded 15.65% and 15.90% respectively.

Municipalities with the lowest participation

On the contrary, some municipalities showed extremely low participation. Lavena Ponte Tresa it reached just 6% turnout, while the Varese capital recorded an overall percentage of 13.39%. Also Busto Arsizio, Gallarate And Saronno showed values ​​lower than the average, with 13.88%, 13.44% and 16.08% respectively.

Turnout at regional level

At a national level, the province of Varese reflects the general trend, but at a regional level the Lombardy exceeded 16%, while the Piedmont exceeded 18%. In the context of the Alto Milanese area, Legnano stopped at 14.92%, Parabiago at 14.32% and Cerro Maggiore at 13.65%.

It is important to note that these numbers could change dramatically on Sunday 9 June, with polls open from 7am to 11pm. In the province of Varese, there are 733,764 eligible voters, distributed across 136 municipalities and 808 sections, for the European elections, while 277,215 voters also participate in the administrative elections in 77 municipalities, of which three have over 15,000 inhabitants.
