ANCONA The weather had a hand in it. On a seaside Saturday with temperatures around 30 degrees – in the Ascoli area it even reached 34 degrees – there were those who preferred the beaches to the polls. The people from the Marche region who yesterday cast their vote for the European elections were 15.69% of the total. The most virtuous province was that of Pesaro which exceeded 18%, followed by that of Ascoli Piceno (17.89%), by that of Macerata (15.05%), by Ancona (14.62%) and by that of Fermo (12.32%).

However, a direct comparison with the 2024 session is not yet possible: five years ago, in fact, voting took place on just one day (Sunday 26 May), while this time it is doubled. Furthermore, it is certainly not just the weather that weighs heavily, given that abstention from the polls – caused by disaffection from politics even more than by the climate trend – is a phenomenon that is anything but seasonal.

At the elections of March 3, 2018, at the end of a week of snow and frost, 77% of citizens voted in the Marche region. In the last Regional elections of 20-21 September 2020, won by the centre-right with Francesco Acquaroli, just under six out of 10 voters had voted (59.8%) despite the fact that due to Covid the polls had also returned to being open on Mondays. It was the last electoral round in which voting was held over two days: on the second day, with polls open from 7am to 3pm, the percentage of voters settled at 17%. If a minimal comparison is possible, in these European elections we are more or less in line. Continuing the electoral trend, things didn’t go any better in the mid-seasons. Voting took place in the 2022 elections on Sunday 25 September and turnout recorded a collapse, with a regional figure of 68.39%, nine points less than the equivalent electoral round in 2018. A disaffection with voting that is also emerging in this European round. There is also time today, from 7am to 11pm, to go to the polls. Will the second round of elections reverse the result?
