Gigi Riva and the Cagliari of the scudetto, the theatrical show lands in New York

“Riva Luigi ’69 ’70. Cagliari in the days of the scudetto”, the successful show of the Cada Die Teatro lands in New York, guest of the Circolo dei Sardi “Shardana”: tomorrow, Sunday 9 June it will be performed, at 1pm, at the Peter Norton Symphony Space’s Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater. The Big Apple thus welcomes the monologue of and with Alexander Lay (lights and sound by Giovanni Schirru, sound project by Matteo Sanna, scenes by Mario Madeddu, Marilena Pittiu, Matteo Sanna, Giovanni Schirru, organization by Tatiana Floris), which since its debut has received convinced acclaim from the public and critics, dedicated to an icon of the history, not only of sports, of Cagliari and of the whole of Sardinia: Gigi Riva, who was and remains, even more so after his death last January, a myth of national football, and beyond.

«In 1970, when Cagliari became champions of Italy, I was 8 years old», writes Alessandro Lay in the presentation notes of the show. «I don’t remember much about the scudetto, but I remember how the city was, how we dressed, how we hung onto the trams to avoid paying, the Panini album and the ‘card’ games on the steps of the primary school. I remember the medal collection, with the profiles of the Cagliari players on the fake, fake gold coins to collect. And I vaguely remember a shy, sometimes smiling boy who always looked the other way when they interviewed him. A boy who put his fists on the ground and ran all over the pitch every time he scored a goal.”

The Sardinian club “Shardana” in New York was founded in 2000 and welcomes Sardinians residing in the United States and friends of Sardinia. With its 150 active members, its first objective is to strengthen the bonds of solidarity between fellow countrymen and to promote the image of Sardinia with exhibitions, reviews, conferences, debates, theatrical and folkloristic shows. And on Sunday 9th he celebrates the myth of “Rombo di Tuono” with the work of Cada Die: «The arrival of this show in New York represents an important milestone for all of us», he says Giacomo Bandinopresident of the Shardana Club.
