The national downhill meeting was held on 2 June at the Bionaz biathlon track, a fundamental stage for evaluating the athletes’ fitness in view of the 2024 WSG in Tortoreto. The meeting saw the participation of almost all the downhill skiers from past editions (a shame about the absence of multiple world champion Renato Pennuti) and numerous very young athletes who are engaging in the discipline with absolutely encouraging results.
The track, finally dry, was in excellent condition and allowed a good simulation of the race route.
The morning was dedicated to exploring the topic of “slides” and their most profitable use in downhill competitions: slides have always been the Achilles’ heel of Italian downhill skiers and therefore we asked, successfully and gratefully, the French champion Etienne Herreros to show us the best possible approach to an otherwise very difficult topic.
In the afternoon, the timed simulations and the ability to tackle tight and challenging curves, with all the limitations of a simulated and not a real road test, provided the technicians with excellent evaluation ideas.
