The Bellomo affair is not over, on the contrary. The sentence of last May 28th by the Federal Territorial Court of the FIGC had “pardoned” Gela calcio, punished with 9 penalty points to be served in the 2023/24 Eccellenza championship ranking, without any de facto consequences towards the team that retained the right to compete in the next Eccellenza championship.
A sentence that is opposed by the interregional federal prosecutor Polo Mormando, who challenges it by submitting a complaint to the federal court of appeal. The decision was taken against the white and blue club for the alleged “inconsistency of the sanction, violation and erroneous application of the general principle of affectivity of the sanction” itself.
What the Prosecutor is asking the Court of Appeal is to impose on Gela the sanction of 11 penalty points to be served in the 2024/25 championship, in addition to the financial fines already previously announced by the Federal Territorial Court.
So everything reopens and -11 in the standings next season would be a huge blow for the white and blue team. At this point even any discussion, still not completely over, about Canicattì’s acquisition of the Serie D title takes second place. The appeal ruling will be heard by the end of the month.
