A memorandum of understanding for give continuity to the path of socio-economic regeneration that starts from the sea, has always been a resource for the economic development of the territory, and with the aim of implementing interventions aimed at developing environmental sustainability and “blue economy”.

It is the latest initiative undertaken by the municipal administration in chronological order regenerate the production and socio-cultural supply chain linked to the sea, enhance the potential of local entities operating in the sector and attract external structural investments.

The one who gave the green light to the signing of the agreement was the Municipal council which, on the basis of what was approved by the Dup 2024-2026 in relation to the development and enhancement of tourism, identified in the Taranto social promotion association “Maremosso Workshops” the person with whom these objectives will be achieved.

«Operating in the context of activities aimed at the conservation and dissemination of traditional sailing seafaring with particular attention to the sector of carpentry and wooden nautical and naval construction – they explain from Palazzo di Città – “Officine Maremosso” will act in concert with the civic body not just for promote the Ionian territory through educational and institutional cruises with dedicated boats that can spread the seafaring vocation of the city of Taranto throughout the world. The aim of the Agreement will also be to spread both the conservation of the culture and techniques of ancient sea crafts linked to the history of the city of Taranto such as the shipwrights, the caulkers and the sea carpenters, both the sailing culture and direct training on traditional sailing boats. A series of activities with which we intend to arouse the interest of young people in a resource capable of contributing to the development of those employment opportunities linked to the “blue economy”.

«The objective that we aim to achieve through this Protocol – declared the deputy mayor Gianni Azzaro, proponent of the resolution subsequently approved by the Council – is to enhance the seafaring traditions of Taranto through services and activities capable of making the sea resource accessible to anyone. Thanks to this fundamental resource for our economy we will also be able to focus on the revaluation of ancient crafts like those of shipwrights or caulkers. Obviously, it is not a return to the past, but the awareness of having to look to the future without forgetting our roots.”
