The CPPS Association – Pontine Community Parks and Natural Systems – APS of Pomezia, has undertaken a project for a few months with the aim of establishing a Civic Museum of Natural History in Pomezia. Taking into account the great variety of natural systems present south of Rome, the association brings into play the skills of professionals of the caliber of Dr Giuliano Russini, botanical biologist-phytopathologist, member of the board of directors of the CPPS association, with the aim of enhancing and manage the natural ecosystems of Pometo, with the involvement of the professionals present in Territorio.

In this regard, the main purpose is the protection and management of the natural monuments and ecosystems of the Territory such as the Regional Nature Reserve of the Sughereta di Pomezia. Subsequently, in collaboration with the Municipality of Ardea, monitor the relevant internal waterways such as the Rio Tortorelated ditches and the marine coastal strip from Pomezia to the Secche di Tor Paterno.

These natural resources need social management to guarantee their correct use by the population and technical-scientific management to guarantee their conservation. The CPPS association makes its experts available with the coordination of Dr Giuliano Russini and plans to involve other experts recognized at national and international level including Prof. Franco Tassi, Prof. Giulia Caneva, historian Giosué Auletta , Dr. Manuela Francesconi and Dr. Angela Di Paola are respectively the director and biologist of the Museum Pontine Land.

The intent is to involve the Municipality of Pomezia in the search for infrastructure to host the establishment of the Ecomuseum and the Civic Museum of Natural History in the same way as the Archaeological Museum Civic Antica Lavinium, formerly owned by the Municipality.

These structures will host within them the naturalistic elements of the Territory illustrated for scientific, conservation and educational purposes. The Territory south of Rome includes the existence of elements falling within the various branches of Biological Sciences: entomology, mycology, ornithology, mammology for mammals, herpetology for reptiles, batrachology for amphibians, ecology, botany for the plants making up the vegetation and the local herbaceous, shrubby and arboreal flora; the fauna and flora -hydrophytes- of inland waters and in reference to the coast and the sea the living marine animal and plant forms.

Furthermore, the profound interest of the volcanic area concerns geology, in terms of mineralogy and petrography. The ethno-anthropological aspects will have a particular impact and will be added to the archaeological ones already present in the existing Museum.

All this will only enhance the countless beauties of our territory for the benefit of culture and the attraction of tourism, placing Pomezia as…”a city that looks to the past, for its ancient archaeological remains, which always remains immersed in its natural beauty”…

The CPPS Association hosted in its headquarters, on 18 January 2024, a meeting with Prof Franco Tassi, one of the great Italian scientific environmentalists, naturalist biologist, ecologist and writer of more than 30 books on ecology, entomology, zoology, on the topics scientific and legal aspects of natural parks, director for 33 years of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise (PNALM), to discuss how to plan and develop this project. Prof. Tassi has agreed to be one of the speakers at a conference, to be held in the second half of September 2024, organized by CPPS and coordinated by Dr. Giuliano Russini. The other eminent professionals mentioned above have expressed a strong interest in starting a collaboration with the association in order to create a network of ecomuseums that enhances both the coast and the hinterland of this strip of territory with naturalistic, ethno-anthropological, archaeological and unique historian.

The Ecomuseum and the Civic Museum of Natural History that you want to propose will be brought to the attention of the Administrations of the City of Pomezia and the City of Ardea which together physically form a single Territory.

It will be interesting to discuss these issues during the conference and the establishment of a supra-municipal body called “Roman Coast Nature Center (CNLR)” which will deal with a series of ecosystems and biotopes ranging from the Regional Natural Reserve of Sughereta di Pomezia, the marine coast with the distribution of natural dunes from Ardea to Torvajanica up to the Secche di Tor Paterno, the fascinating area that merges into “Sulforata ditch” (or Solfatara), of the important RioTorto water complex.

A further intent is to guarantee the ecological corridors for which CNLR will join in a network with the Museum of Pontine Land of Latina from whom the proposal has already received promising approval as well as from the representatives of the Sabaudia Natural Park which falls within the Circeo Park, thus creating a communication network of ecomuseums ready to exchange scientific information to protect a considerable portion of the Lazio territory.

To develop this network of ecomuseums between Pomezia, Ardea, Latina Sabaudia and Castelli Romani, in the first days of September there will be, at the Museum Pontine Land in Latina, a preventive meeting between the members of the Board of Directors of the CPPS Association, the coordinator Dr Giuliano Russini, the representatives of the Sabaudia Natural Park, to evaluate the concreteness of this ambitious project for the benefit of the population of the Municipalities of Pomezia and Ardea and of the other cities involved in relation to their ecomuseums.
