It took place at the Cloister of San Giorgio al Corso the multidisciplinary meeting on the environmental conditions and territory of the city of Reggio Calabria. The promoter of the debate and President of the Historic Center Committee introduced the proceedings “DeNava” Manlio Mascalchi Calveri. The evening full of contributions began, after observing a minute’s silence for the recent death of Silvia Caruso, part of the working group that promotes the value of the city center by reporting misunderstandings and enhancing its potential. The first of the reports was presented by Dr. Serafina Teramo, specialist in dermatology and venereology. In the slides shown to those present, Dr. Teramo highlighted clinical cases due to less than adequate conditions of the beaches and sea in Reggio Calabria due to the release of city streams rich in waste, including sewage, into the sea waters. These situations are also aggravated by climate change caused often from sudden increases in temperatures that cause serious dermatitis and skin diseases.
The argument addressed by Dr. Gabriele Quattronepsychiatrist, psychologist and head physician at the Madonna della Consolazione Polyclinic, has involved the new pathologies of young people who often, thanks to a society aimed at extreme competition, throw in the towel and isolate themselves completely, remaining in contact with the rest of humanity exclusively via social media or tools telematics.
Equally interesting and in-depth is the report by Dr. Filippo Barreca pulmonologist al GOM, which underlined the hidden, but not too much, dangers in the respiratory tract. One above all is the asphalt of the roads in Reggio Calabria and all those elements necessary for its positioning and use. Considerable damage is caused by the tiny and imperceptible particles present in the air also caused by various types of pollution such as carbonaceous and monoxide particles from means of transport.
The evening concluded with the engaging report from the professor ofMediterranean University of Urban Planning and Territory and industrial researcher Carmine Quistelli. The same speaker thanks to a historical excursus, starting from the consequences and treatments of the pandemic period and then working backwards on the perception of nature before and after the introduction of advanced technological tools. What did they bring? What results if first of all the damage caused by very high risk environmental factors is not prevented. The professor he made known his international experiences and those linked to a growing area from an academic point of view. Students who graduate with the teacher immediately find employment. The challenge of the present is to create the conditions to be able to put into practice the cultural baggage acquired in our prestigious world Universityeven in our context. Therefore, with the knowledge gained, the damage that has been present for years in the Reggio Emilia environment can already be resolved, just as it has been resolved in many national urban centers for a long time.
The interventions were appreciated, especially the questions from theadv. Frank Polimenoas a member of the neighborhood committee Historic Center “De Nava”, concerned the resurgence of dermatological parasitoses and the increase in the presence of combusted nanoplastics in the environment as a factor in the increase of pneumological and cardiorespiratory pathologies. The speakers then responded and interacted with those present, before receiving a souvenir scroll of the successful evening which, as declared by President Mascalchi Calveri expressly wanted to put a finger on the wound of the problems of a city that has lost the tourist offer caused by a sick environment and therefore now needs right, shared and participatory choices to avoid stumbling again into the mistakes of the recent past, one above all the construction of Liquichemistry of Ionic Salinestherefore forcefully relaunch all actions to encourage the search for normality, currently a mere chimera according to the quality of life rankings despite the many opportunities of our beloved Reggio Calabria.
