European elections, the guide for Abruzzo

Voting in the European elections will take place on Saturday 8 June from 3pm to 11pm and on Sunday 9 June from 7am to 11pm. Of the five constituencies into which the Italian territory is divided, Abruzzo is located in the southern one, together with Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Molise and Puglia.

How to vote

Those entitled to vote in the European elections there are approximately one million two hundred thousand in our region. We vote with the proportional system, with a threshold of 4 percent: it means that to elect MEPs each of the twelve competing political forces has the obligation to reach this percentage quota in terms of overall votes. On the ballot, after marking the symbol of the chosen party, preferences can be expressed, although this is not mandatory. There can be up to three, but if there are at least two they must represent both sexes: a man and a woman, a man and two women, two men and a woman. First, the numbers of those elected for each list and constituency are established, then those elected based on the quantity of preferences obtained. For the first time, on an experimental basis, the election is open to non-resident students. In the southern constituency, 18 MEPs will be elected out of 76 throughout the national territory and of the 705 in total.

The lists

Twelve political forces in the field in the European elections, which the electorates and voters will find represented on the ballot: Brothers of Italy, Forza Italia/Noi Moderati, Lega, Democratic Party, Five Star Movement, Green Left Alliance, United States of Europe , Action, Peace Earth Dignity, Action, Popular alternative, Animal rights party. Forza Italia and Noi Moderati refer to the European family of the People’s Party, the Democratic Party to the socialists – democrats, Renew Europe Action and the United States of Europe which includes, among others, Italia Viva, Radicali, PSI and Più Europa. The League is part of Identità e Democracy and Fratelli d’Italia of the Conservatives.

The functions of the European Parliament

The European Parliament is based in Strasbourg although most of the Commission’s activities take place in Brussels. The European Parliament shares legislative power with the Council of the Union, exercises democratic control over all the institutions, bodies, offices and agencies of the European Union and in particular the Commission, shares with the Council of the Union the budgetary power of ‘Eu. The formation of the majority (currently made up of the People’s Party, the Socialists and the Liberals of Renew Europe) and the composition of the European Commission will also depend on the outcome of the European elections, and on the weight and distribution of seats among the political families, in addition to the personality who will carry out the role of president, currently held by Ursula von der Leyen.

The Abruzzo candidates

In the lists of the southern constituency, each of a maximum of 18 members, there are a total of 15 from Abruzzo: Antonella Ballone and Eliseo Iannini (Forza Italia), Laura Cucchiarella (League), Nicola D’Ambrosio And Giovanna Greco (Brothers of Italy), Manola Di Pasquale (Pd), Valentina Corneli And Fabio Stella (Five stars), Dino Rossi (Freedom), Ilaria Leonardis, Paolo Della Ventura And Maurizio Acerbo (Peace Earth Dignity), Emanuela Pistoia (United States of Europe), Giulia Persico (Green Left Alliance), Libera D’Amelio (Action). The polls in Abruzzo will also be open for the local elections, which will involve 98 municipalities.
