A sensational result was achieved on Wednesday 5 June by the extraordinary patrols organized by the Trentino Alto Adige Traffic Police Department in the Brenner border area and along the A22 motorway.
During the afternoon, a patrol from the Trento Traffic Police Subsection noticed a truck with a Greek license plate proceeding in a suspicious manner, with continuous skidding.
For this reason the patrol stopped the vehicle at the Trento Nord motorway toll booth, where it could ascertain the cause of the truck driver’s distraction, i.e. the presence on board of a lively little dog in the driving cab.
The subsequent check of the driving license and transport documents then made it possible to establish that the truck in question came from Holland. Having ascertained the above, the patrol then decided to investigate further by asking the driver, a forty-six year old of Greek nationality, to be able to check the load.
Following this request, however, the man began to show an unusual nervousness, making the Subsection operators suspicious. These thus requested the immediate intervention of two canine units of the Trento Financial Police, who immediately reported – after a thorough inspection – the probable presence of narcotic substances in the front part of the semi-trailer.
The subsequent search, carried out at a specialized company in Spini di Gardolo, revealed a secret compartment, hidden by a bulkhead, where 60 blocks wrapped in packing tape were contained, containing a total of over 67 kg of cocaine.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested for drug trafficking and made available to the Judicial Authority, the truck and its trailer were seized, while the dog was entrusted to a Trentino association.
It should be noted that the market value of the seized drugs amounts to over 5 million euros and that further investigations are underway under the direction of the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Court of Trento.
