The Harmonic Season in Ravenna Festival with The New and the Ancient

The Harmonic Season

If there is a composer who recognized the power of music to be able to change society, that was Luigi Nono. How the thought of him is still alive, a hundred years after his birth, is also demonstrated by the musical combinations that involve his music, not infrequently compared to the great polyphonic constructions of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in the name of that continuity of the past (or of the “present of the past”) that Nono himself has always theorized. That’s what will happen at Ravenna Festival with The New and the Oldthe concert of Saturday 8 Juneat 9pm at Artificerie Almagià – where the ensemble La Sicurezza Armonica directed by Sergio Balestracci will demonstrate vocal virtuosity in two compositions separated by four centuries: Das atmende Klarsein by Nono (1981) and some songs fromOfficium Hebdomadae Sanctae in Passione Domini (1585) by the Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria, who lived between 1548 and 1611. Together with the Harmonic Seasonwhich on Sunday 9 June at 11 am will be in the Metropolitan Basilica of Ravenna for the appointment In the Domini templethey will be protagonists two musicians closely linked to the Nonian experience: the flautist Roberto Fabbriciani and the sound director Alvise Vidolin.

In his last decade of life, Nono dedicated some revolutionary works to the contemporary flute, inseparable from his collaboration with Roberto Fabbriciani. Das atmende Klarsein (The breath of clarity) it was first performed in 1981 in Florence for a training that included small choir, bass flute, live electronics and magnetic tape. In the text we combine words from Duino elegies by Rilke and by some Orphic plates, those used in ancient burials in the Mediterranean area. The attention to dynamics and sounds, pushed to the limit of the audible, make the listener acquire a new sensitivity, making him enter a new and alienating temporal dimension. Audience and performers are enveloped by the sound that is spatialized by the speakers. The flautist, however, is asked to interact with himself, according to the delay technique. One of the fundamental issues, for Nono, was to accompany listening beyond the threshold of tradition, building new physical and sound spaces, imagining listening utopias in which even silence, the antechamber of the unspeakable, acquired a philosophical value. In particular, for Luigi Nono technology allows the reworking of sound emission techniques, reverberations and relationships with space, in continuity with the ancient Venetian tradition. The result is a meditation on death and the divine mystery that dialogues with pieces from the Office of Holy Week by Tomás Luis de Victoria, the great Spanish composer active in Palestrina’s Rome.

Alvise Vidolin he took care of the electronic creation and direction of the sound of hundreds of musical works, collaborating with the major composers of the twentieth century and contemporary, such as Giorgio Battistelli, Luciano Berio, Adriano Guarnieri, Luigi Nono, Salvatore Sciarrino… He has collaborated since 1974 with the Center for Computational Sonology (CSC) of the University of Padua; since 1977 he has collaborated on various occasions with the Venice Biennale. Flutist and composer, Roberto Fabbriciani he is internationally recognized among the best interpreters of his instrument, whose technique he has innovated, multiplying the sound and expressive possibilities with personal research. He has collaborated with composers ranging from John Cage to György Ligeti, from Ennio Morricone to Karlheinz Stockhausen, Toru Takemitsu and many others who dedicated works to him to be premiered; with Luigi Nono he worked for a long time at the SWF experimental studio in Freiburg, opening and pursuing new and unusual paths for music.
