The San Giovanni di Dio hospital in Crotone celebrates the inauguration of the water birth tub, to offer more humane and personalized care to future mothers

A new opportunity for future mothers in the area: a tub for water births was donated to the Gynecology and Obstetrics department of the San Giovanni di Dio Hospital in Crotone. The precious gift comes from the “Note Fuori Udienza” lawyers’ committee, composed of Roberto Stricagnoli, Serafina Cavaliere, Marzia Lucente, Francesco Licari, Caterina Marano and Pina Notarianni.

The inauguration ceremony took place on Tuesday 11 June at 11.30 am, organized by the provincial health authority. This event celebrates a meaningful alternative to traditional modes of labor and birth, offering women a pampering experience that can ease the process and reduce the pain of contractions.

The “Notes Outside the Hearing” committee had announced its intention to donate 13,000 euros to the Gynecology and Obstetrics department during the charity concert held last December. This gesture, aimed at celebrating the figure of women and supporting the right to life and health, represents a concrete act of great generosity and sensitivity towards public health and the Crotone community.

The director of the Gynecology department, Domenico Galea, together with the extraordinary commissioner of the ASP, Antonio Brambilla, expressed profound gratitude to the lawyers and all those who contributed to the fundraising. In recognition of this generosity, the medical management, led by Lucio Cosentino, organized the inauguration of the new tank.

The Gynecology and Obstetrics department of San Giovanni di Dio, with approximately 1200 births per year, has become an important point of reference for Crotone and its surroundings. The team is made up of seven trained doctors, two Cuban doctors and two doctors in specialist training from the University of Catanzaro. The department’s caesarean section rate in 2023 was significantly lower than the national average, with 11.2% for first caesareans and 21.8% for total caesareans, compared to national averages of 19.9% respectively. and 36.35%.

The acquisition of the water birth tub could not only increase the number of patients choosing Pythagorean Hospital, but also further contribute to reducing the rate of cesarean sections. This objective is strongly supported by the WHO and the international medical community, who recommend reserving caesarean sections only for those who actually need it.

The Crotone Provincial Health Authority is also working to offer birth analgesia in the future, a technique used to relieve the pain of labor and natural birth. This technique is particularly indicated in complex obstetric situations, such as premature, prolonged or induced labor, or for women with previous caesarean sections and specific pathologies.

With these initiatives, the San Giovanni di Dio Hospital confirms itself as a cutting-edge center in the promotion of women’s health and well-being, offering increasingly humane and personalized care.
