Porta Torre will remain with the barriers for at least another year, namely until the spring of 2025. The bad weather that has hit the area in recent months without granting respite has postponed the restoration and maintenance works. This is the motivation that comes from the Municipality of Como after the announcements that indicated the spring of this year as the date for removing the barriers from Porta Torre once and for all. However – as mentioned – this was not the case and one of the main entrances to the historic center of Como will therefore remain closed for many more months.
Entry has been prohibited since April 2022 when a stone fell from the top of the tower, fortunately without injuring anyone. The result: the area under the city’s entrance gate was cordoned off for security reasons.
In the meantime – Palazzo Cernezzi reports – the maintenance plan to make the tower safe would be ready. For both Torre San Vitale and Porta Torre the city administration, after a series of meetings with the Superintendency, is studying the creation of “guidelines”, tools necessary for operating safely at high altitudes. The resources foreseen in the municipal budget amount to over 220 thousand euros. Furthermore, work on the towers for safety and maintenance checks will start in September.
In recent months, the Como council has prepared a maintenance plan to clean the towers and city walls of plants and shrubs that can cause falling rocks. This is a multi-year management plan for the ordinary maintenance of towers and walls, with checks every 12-18 months. The objective – as mentioned – is to secure the city fortifications, through targeted control interventions such as the elimination of vegetation. Finally, as regards Torre Gattoni, the fence will be replaced with a new, higher fence.
