Municipal elections in Sicily, when and how to vote

PALERMO – Not just European elections. On the same days in which Italians will go to the polls for the renewal of the European Parliament, the voters of 37 Sicilian municipalities are called to renew their municipal councils and elect their mayors.

Municipal elections, when to vote

In eight centers the proportional system is used, while in the remaining 29 (the smaller municipalities) the majority system is used. The interested voters are 483,901. Voting operations will take place on Saturday 8 June, from 3pm to 11pm, and Sunday 9 June, from 7am to 11pm. In the municipalities that will vote with the proportional system, the possible run-off round will be held on Sunday 23 June, from 7am to 11pm, and Monday 24 June, from 7am to 3pm.

What do you need to vote

The voter must go to the polls bringing with them their voter card and a valid identity document. One or two preferences can be expressed for the candidates for the city council; in the event that two preferences are expressed, these must concern candidates of different genders (a man and a woman). If both preferences belong to the same gender, the second will be cancelled.

Municipal elections, how to vote

The vote expressed for a list extends to the mayoral candidate connected to it, but not vice versa. You can express your preference for a mayoral candidate and a list connected to him, and also express your choice of candidates for the city council. It is also possible to express a preference for a mayoral candidate and for a list not connected to him, with related preferences for the candidates for the city council: the so-called ‘split vote’.
