Pozzuoli. Damage amounting to 100 thousand euros to the underwater equipment of the INGV Vesuvian Observatory in the Gulf of Pozzuoli, by unscrupulous fishermen and boats that drop anchors regardless of the presence of buoys that signal the presence of instruments on the seabed.
This is the alarm raised again today on Rai News24 by Mauro Di Vito, director of the Observatory.
“There has been repeated damage to our equipment as in the case of the Gulf of Pozzuoli. These are unique devices in the world placed in low seas which unfortunately are sometimes, I hope involuntarily, pulled up by anchors and fishermen’s nets in an area declared off-limits.
The anchorages and damages continue equally, not only of an economic nature but also linked to the sending and recording of data to our monitoring center.
Anyone who sees something should notify the Port Authority and us, for this equipment it is essential that it is not damaged repeatedly, especially in such a delicate moment.
Sometimes boats that recognize each other come to anchor close to this very delicate exploitation which is sometimes found at minus 50, 30, 70 metres. We then have to intervene but what is most serious is the loss of data, we cannot afford it.”
“It is a unique instrument in the world and we need it to study the phenomenon”
This instrumentation is unique in the world and researchers come from all over the world to see how we do our work. Help us continue to do so because the data we collect with that instrumentation are fundamental to understanding the phenomenon of bradyseism. At this moment we need everyone’s help.”
