Bringing water from springs to coastal areas: the intervention of European funds in Molise

The European Cohesion Policy supports projects to improve the well-being, health and safety of people, and to create opportunities for growth and economic development in the territories.

In Molise, the resources coming from the European Fund for Regional Development (ERDF) 2014-2020, amounting to 5,412,000.00 euros, made it possible to finance the construction of the technical and additional variant of the central Molise aqueduct and the interconnection with the Basso Molise scheme in the stretch from Termoli to Montenero di Bisaccia, in the province of Campobasso.

An intervention aimed at improving and strengthening the drinking water supply service for the coastal areas, bringing the water from the Matese Massif springs directly to the homes of the two urban centres.

Furthermore, this infrastructural work will allow the two Municipalities to deal with the problem of the water emergency, which characterizes these areas especially during the summer season, linked to quantitative and qualitative deficiencies recorded between 2010 and 2012 in the Liscione reservoir.

Created between the 1960s and 1970s by building a dam on the Biferno river, Lake Guardialfiera – or Liscione – is an artificial reservoir, and represents the largest artificial water reservoir in Molise.

The intervention financed with European funds is also of vital importance for the agricultural sector, because it will allow the water resources of the Liscione not used for the drinking water supply of the coastal areas to be allocated to irrigation systems.

A strategic project for the coastal areas of Molise and their communities.
