Crotone – The heat it’s scorching, but there’s little water in the city streets, and there can be plenty of advice. Among the many suggestions, that of giving a new function to the now closed, old and worn out fountains. Temperatures reached 40 degrees. But many public drinking fountains are closed.

Temperatures will soon begin to reach 40 degrees and citizens, or visitors to our Crotone, need to find refreshment by drinking a little fresh water or wetting their wrists. And why not, water can quench the thirst of our 4-legged friends or birds.

Some fountains work: those for example in via Giuseppe Di Vittorio, “le senatorelle”, work and allow many to fill their cans with water while avoiding plastic bottles. The fountain of Immaculate Square it works and dispenses water perfectly, as does that of Piazza Santa Veneranda in the historic center, or of Baden Powell Park on viale Regina Margherita.

The small fountain near the hospital in via Bologna has run dry and is now broken; the ones near the Vittorio Alfieri middle school are broken, while not even the fountain in Piazza della Resistenza in front of the town hall works, useful for example for washing your hands or wetting your wrists during the summer heat. Just as the fountain donated by the Moroccan community of Cutro to Crotone was broken (the one in Piazza Lea Garofalo, near via Tellini).

The fountains are urban furnishings of public utility scattered throughout the city, where some are currently unusable. Some, however, do not seem to take great care of them, so much so that they are used by us citizens (as in via Bologna) in “improvised” rubbish containers.

Among the recommendations, a site could be created (after the repair of the fountains themselves) which offers an interactive map of the fountains, to view their location in the city through Google Maps, and to therefore easily identify the closest one to reach.

Places and streets revisited, thus giving new life to the facilities, some of which have instead been completely changed. Small gestures and signs even on very busy streets where there are no public fountains to cope with the summer. And to avoid wasting water, those with a button or handle could be placed.
