Strengthen cooperation between the Region and Municipalities to promote the economic, productive and social development of Sicily, from a sustainability perspective, through the use of community funds and cooperation with the countries of the Mediterranean basin.

This is the purpose of the memorandum of understanding signed today in Palermo between the department of extra-regional affairs of the Presidency of the Sicilian Region (DAE) and Anci Sicily, the association of Municipalities.

The agreement lasts three years, here’s what it provides

The agreement will be valid for three years and provides for the launch of information and training actions for the creation of international partnerships under the programs managed by the European Union. Participation in meetings with countries in the Euro-Mediterranean area for the promotion of sustainable economic development models and good practices through forms of international cooperation is also envisaged.

Through the agreement, the Dae intends to make available to the Municipalities the wealth of experience gained in its coordination activity of the Conference of Peripheral and Maritime Regions of Europe, of the Permanent Partnership Committee of Local and Regional Authorities (Coppem) and in the implementation of the Strategy of the Adriatic-Ionian macroregion.

In recent days, a Meloni-Schifani agreement was signed which is worth 5 billion

In recent days, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni arrived in Palermo for the signing of the Agreement for the Development and Cohesion Fund (FSC) 2021-2027. A plan estimated at around 6.8 billion euros which was signed by the central government and the Sicilian Region. Welcomed by the president of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, the prime minister claimed the goodness of the work carried out, already in recent months, on the Rome-Palermo axis. Also present at the meeting were Ministers Adolfo Urso and Raffaele Fitto.

“This agreement is a challenge, all our work is a challenge of good governance – said the President of the Region Renato Schifani – Solidarity collaboration between State and Region is right. The Statute provides for it, all the constitutional provisions provide for it. There can’t be leopard spots.”

The goal of programming

The objective of this programming is to contribute to the recovery of Sicily’s competitive disadvantage compared to other Italian regions. The figure that catches the eye is that of 1.3 billion euros for the co-financing of the Strait Bridge, but in the agreement on the programming of FSc resources 2021-2027, many resources are allocated to waste-to-energy plants and to the resolution of the water crisis which is hitting Sicily.

580 projects were presented for a total of 6 billion and 862 million to be invested in 9 macro areas but 2.1 billion go to Ponte sull’Sretto and waste-to-energy plants, therefore approximately 4 billion and 750 million are the other interventions

Having removed the funds already at the center of controversy in recent weeks, i.e. the main amount, 1.3 billion, to be spent by 2027 which will go to the Messina Bridge while another 800 million are destined for the waste-to-energy plants of Palermo and Catania, there remains just under 5 billion
