Savona, the gynecologist accused of aggravated sexual assault sentenced to 11 years

Savona – Eleven years of imprisonment plus the payment of 20 thousand euros for each of the civil parties. This is the condemnation established by judge Fiorenza Giorgi towards Maurizio Traversa, 59 years old, gynecologist from Savonaformer employee of the Savona ASL, arrested in June 2023 (now under house arrest), accused of aggravated sexual assault. According to the accusation, during visits to patients, she practiced actions that went further, resulting in the hypothesis of sexual abuse. There are six charges against Traversa and six women who have taken civil action.

At the end of the indictment before the Court of Assizes, presided over by judge Fiorenza Giorgi (hearing behind closed doors due to the sensitivity of the issues), the prosecutor Elisa Milocco he had asked for 15 years, requesting that general extenuating circumstances not be granted. The lawyer who defends Traversa, Andrea Frascherellihad instead asked for acquittal “because the fact does not exist”.

Traversa had refused the abbreviated procedure, wanting to go to the trial to defend his position and reiterate his innocence. The gynecologist worked in private practice and in the Gynecology and Obstetrics department of the San Paolo hospital in Savona until last June.

The facts would have occurred in private practice, where environmental interception devices would have been installed during the investigation phase. The accusation is that of sexual assault. The file is substantial and is accompanied by videos recorded during environmental interceptions. Video, which according to the investigators, leaves no doubt about the “unorthodox” behavior of the doctor and the fact that the patients (contrary to what the gynecologist claimed in the interrogation) were not consenting. According to the gynecologist’s version, however, the actions were carried out on consenting patients with sexual dysfunctions. Specifically, he would have simulated sexual intercourse for diagnostic purposes using practices developed by him, but never compared with other medical colleagues.
