The melanoma can be knocked out. To do this, cutting-edge research tools and professionals are needed. To achieve an increasingly timely diagnosis, a fundraiser has been activated in favor ofApprox of Ancona in order to provide the Dermatology Unit with one of the most modern pieces of equipment currently on the market with Artificial Intelligence.

How to donate

The campaign, promoted by the Friends of the Geriatric Association Inrca, is called “Against melanoma, every donation counts”. The objective to be achieved is the purchase of the precious machine with the Atbm system, which allows the control and early diagnosis of melanoma in patients at risk. Everyone can contribute with a financial donation, whether small or large. To do this you can write “Eppela melanoma” in a web search engine or connect to the website www.inrca.it and click on the News section. The dermatology department of the Inrca of Ancona, directed by Dr Alfredo Giacchetti, is considered a regional point of reference for the diagnosis and treatment of skin tumors, and with the machinery being collected the bar becomes increasingly higher.

What is it

Cutaneous melanoma is a tumor that results from the tumor transformation of melanocytes, which are cells present in the epidermis that produce melanin, a pigment that protects the skin from the harmful effects of sun rays. Mortality from melanoma today is among the lowest among all tumors given its growing incidence, and has reduced in recent times thanks to early diagnosis and the use of new drugs, such as targeted drugs and immunotherapies. In the Marche region, from 2015 to 2020, there were 331 deaths from melanoma out of more than 3000 cases and an annual healthcare cost of 1,800,000 euros. Between 2017 and 2022, almost 27% of deaths in Italy from melanoma were recorded in the central regions. In the same period of time, more than 81 thousand people were infected in Italy.

Patients at risk of melanoma are those who have already been treated for this tumor but also “those who have cases of melanoma in the family, who have one or more large congenital moles and who have more than 50 moles in their body – he states dermatologist Dr Alfredo Giacchetti, Uoc director of Dermatology Inrca Ancona – People with freckles and blond-red hair, light eyes, a particularly white complexion and extremely sensitive to the sun are also at risk. Anyone who has had previous sunburn, especially in childhood and adolescence, should also be monitored.” At the dermatology department of the Inrca of Ancona, early diagnosis is currently made with manual, digital and confocal dermoscopy: with Total Body Mapping another important piece is added.

Artificial intelligence

The Atbm system of the innovative machine, using Total Body Dermoscopy, can help identify melanomas early by exploiting Artificial Intelligence which allows new or modified neoformations to be identified more quickly and precisely. Specifically, the skin is photographed all together, and at the next check, new or modified neoformations are highlighted. It is now established that 80% of melanomas do not arise on pre-existing moles, but arise from scratch. The usefulness of the new equipment is maximum in patients with a high number of moles. Other important advantages include the reduction of visit times, unnecessary interventions, waiting lists and also the reduction of mortality.
