President Lungarini: “The first structural works have already been delivered”

Over the last three years the objective for CSP srl has been to plan the future of the monumental cemetery, build construction sites and carry out interventions on the most damaged structures.

Having obtained the favorable opinion of the Superintendent, Arch. Margherita Eichberg, on the ambitious project concerning the redevelopment of the entire complex, the company recently completed the complete renovation of the Vaselli Department which was in dilapidated conditions.

Therefore, with the funds from the obligation to do action contract, during 2023 a piece of history abandoned to itself for almost 100 years was returned to the city.

In detail, the interventions implemented in the Vaselli department concerned the waterproofing of the roof and the restoration of the front and the sub-frame; the waterproofing of the landing floor and the staircase and under the stairs; the restoration of the existing flooring of the staircase and landing by cleaning the marble and replacing the damaged elements; the replacement of the parapets of the stairs and landing; the installation of stairs that will slide on tracks against the wall of the niches and will allow you to reach the highest rows safely, without the risk of approaching the parapet; the restoration of the pillars leaning against the walls on the internal side of the cemetery and on the external side towards Fiumaretta.

Also during this year, steps were taken to make the rear part of the chamber safe, having suffered from some failures which required immediate maintenance.

However, work has already started and is continuing apace for the refurbishment of the Sapco department, which is also damaged, and the restoration of the fire brigade cemetery. Both construction sites are in a good state of progress and the works will be delivered by the end of the year.

Those who pass outside the ancient cemetery, however, will certainly have noticed the restructuring of the perimeter walls on which the restyling work is almost finished, always under the careful direction of the Superintendence. The general planning tool adopted will therefore allow, in the coming years, to continue the restoration work of the monumental cemetery, perhaps by intercepting financing that can multiply the limited funds made available by the Municipality.

There has also been a change of pace in the care of greenery, once the subject of fierce complaints from users and now completely under control also thanks to the different work organization adopted starting from the second half of 2021.

As regards the new cemetery, the emergency of the mortuary chamber which was unusable and at risk of collapse until the end of 2021 was overcome some time ago, and then all the bathrooms and fountains which were in disastrous conditions and almost always unusable were renovated.

Attention was then focused on the entrances to the various departments, often the subject of collapses and accidents, especially to the detriment of elderly people due to the instability of the ground. Now, however, they are new and refined, as well as most of the parking lots and sidewalks, replaced and refurbished. The pine trees, which due to their roots had torn up the road surface, were also removed, replacing them with cypresses, which are certainly more suitable for the place.

“The change of pace in the last three years is there for all to see – confirms the president of CSP Srl, Avv. Fabrizio Lungarini – the company has equipped itself with a tender and design office and has thus optimized resources and halved times of carrying out projects that have remained in the Administration’s drawers for too long. The Master Plan of the Ancient Cemetery also represents a milestone that will be left as a legacy to the new administration which we hope will be able to invest even more in the two city cemeteries. We have recovered the decorum and respect for these sacred and important places and for this we must give credit to the commitment of the workers, administrators and municipal offices who made this turnaround possible.

We have also finally made around 100 niches available to citizens, for those who choose to keep the ashes of their loved ones inside the new cemetery. Lastly, – concludes Lungarini – CSP srl has drawn up the subdivision plan for the new cemetery which will finally allow entire departments to be built, definitively overcoming the emergency due to the shortage of places.”
