Ex Cinema Orchidea in Reggio, works ready to restart

Work is finally ready to restart at the former Cinema Orchidea in Reggio Calabria. According to what has been gathered, some preparatory operations will be carried out this week (such as the dismantling of cables) and the last inspection before the actual restart of the works.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 3 June, a meeting is scheduled between the municipal administration and the company that will take care of the works during which some important steps will be agreed, for example the period of closure of some roads necessary for the intervention.

From Palazzo San Giorgio, particularly for Via Marina Alta, a fundamental hub for city traffic, the intention is to limit the closure for the time strictly necessary for the planned interventions.

The former Cinema Orchidea in Reggio Calabria will be transformed into the “Mediterranean Cultural Gate,” a cultural hub financed with 4 million euros from the Pnrr and the Pacts for the South. The idea, born in 2019, has faced various bureaucratic challenges but has finally got approval in 2023.

Last February, after weeks of stopped construction, the words of the opposition municipal councilor Mario Cardia.

‘Work already suspended, Game Over for the Mayor’s announcements. After the charade of a month ago, work has come to an inexorable halt and not a single worker has been seen for weeks.

What’s left? There remain unbearable lies told to the City and the citizens, these empty walkways remain which have as their sole objective to make people believe that something is moving “thanks” to the mayor”, the intervention a few months ago of the municipal councilor of the League.

Now, however, it seems that the problems of recent months have been overcome, the Falcomatà administration assures that work at the former Cinema Orchidea is ready to restart.

  • Events and Shows: The main hall will be versatile, suitable for theatre, cinema, performances and festivals.
  • Galleries and Exhibitions: The galleries will connect the spaces, ideal for exhibitions and events.
  • Terrace and Creativity: The top floor will house a café, a media library, art workshops and artist accommodation.
