The Lombardy Region will co-finance with 2 million euros the works on the ‘Gronda Nord’ infrastructure in the territories served by the Consorzio di Bonifica Terre dei Gonzaga in Destra Po, as foreseen by a resolution approved by the council.

“This work – comments the regional councilor for Agriculture Alessandro Beduschi – is important in many respects. From an agricultural point of view, the water supply is made more efficient in an area where unique products such as Parmigiano Reggiano and Mantua Melon are produced and at the same time there will be an important landscape impact, with clear advantages also for fish and land fauna”.

The intervention was included by the Ministry of Agriculture among those deserving of national contribution for its irrigation, environmental, land and agriculture defense characteristics from instability phenomena and will have a total cost of over 18 million euros, 16 of which covered by ministerial funds.

The project involves the removal of a ten kilometer stretch of above-ground concrete canal, which will be replaced with an underground pipeline, allowing, as underlined in a note from the Region, to “resolve the problem of both the loss of water resources and interruptions of operation, with advantages also for maintenance work”.

The stretch of Gronda Nord which will be affected by the works uses water taken from the Po river through the Sabbioncello plant and flows in an area between the Mantuan municipalities of Quingentole and Borgo Mantovano.
