Municipality of Crotone – Ancient Kroton

While work is underway in the Acquabona district, this morning the second construction site as part of the Antica Kroton program campaign began in the “Gravina” area.

Mayor Voce, the manager of the Ancient Kroton Special Unit Antonio Senatore, the director of works Giovanni Procopio, the officials of the Ancient Kroton Special Unit Flora Spagnulo and Giuseppe Tarantino were present.

Also present was the president of the IV Council Commission Domenico Lo Guarro and the president of the V Council Commission Paolo Acri.

The intervention, for an amount of 1,200,000 euros, falls into cluster 3 of the program.

The philosophy of the project as a whole is to enhance the ancient polis not only through the archaeological assets that will be brought to light but above all through the narration of its past.

The so-called “narrative tape” was identified as a connecting element between all the sub-interventions.

A ribbon worked in bas-relief and engraving inserted into the paving that extends along all the pedestrian paths.

Specifically, the intervention concerning the “Gravina” area involves excavation and restoration works with the aim of enhancing the archeology hidden by the stratification of the new urban fabric.

The archaeological site in question will be inserted within the circuit of the urban archaeological park network of the city and interconnected to the suspended archaeological route which will be created with the intervention “usability through the old route of the Calabro – Lucana railway”

In the Gravina area, the creation and installation of signs and specific descriptive and informative billboards (multilingual) is planned both within the site and in the main connecting arteries, high-efficiency lighting systems that will exploit high-efficiency renewable energy conceived in such a way as to facilitate the reading of the ancient housing system, urban re-design for the redevelopment of the areas adjacent to the site: scenes with the aim of mitigating situations of degradation along the edges.

And also the creation of a covering structure to protect the area compatible with the system of ancient evidence and which enhances its constitutive peculiarities and facilitates reading, made with non-impacting and potentially reversible materials, which combines in an innovative but moderate, safety, aesthetic performance, conservative effectiveness and museographic functionality and the creation of a photovoltaic system, integrated into the roof.

For these interventions, the assistance of an archaeologist during the construction phases and of the competent Superintendency with which the individual interventions will be specifically identified is envisaged.

“I thank the members of the Ancient Kroton Unit who are working with attention and professionalism also considering the value of the project. From the planning phase we have moved on to the executive phase which we will follow with equal attention” said the Senatore manager.

“This is a project destined to change the face of the city. We plan to open other Antica Kroton construction sites in the coming weeks. The Gravina area is one of the projects where the administration will also take care of the archaeological excavations and it is an intervention linked to other activities we have planned” said Mayor Voce.
