STM announced the construction of the first plant in the world entirely dedicated to the production of silicon carbide (SiC), located in Catania. This initiative strengthens the company’s position at the forefront of SiC technology, essential for power devices in key sectors such as automotive and industrial.

The facility will be part of the STM Silicon Carbide Campus, an integrated hub that brings together the production of SiC substrates and testing and packaging activities, all located on the same site. This centralization ensures complete vertical integration of operations, from the production of substrates to the creation of finished devices, allowing unprecedented scalability.

Production is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the aim of reaching full production capacity by 2033. A weekly production of up to 15,000 wafers and a total investment of approx five billion euros. Of these, approximately two billion will be financed by the Italian state through the Chips Act of the European Union.

The Silicon Carbide Campus it will not just be a center of manufacturing excellence, but also a model of sustainability. Attention to reducing the consumption of resources such as water and energy is fundamental in the design and daily operations of the campus, in order to minimize the environmental impact of production activity.

Jean-Marc Cherypresident and CEO of STMicroelectronicsunderlined the importance of the campus to the future of the company and the technology sector in general. “The fully integrated capabilities of the Silicon Carbide Campus in Catania are essential to consolidate our leadership in SiC technology. This will allow us to offer our customers innovative, high-volume solutions, essential for electrification and energy efficiency”Chery said.
