“We will fight with all our energy to defend the environment, against the proliferation of renewable energy plants, starting with wind power on Lake Bolsena, exactly as we are doing on the Monterazzano landfill”. The mayor of Viterbo Chiara Frontini takes a position on the large wind farm that would like to be built around Lake Bolsena with the construction of 16 blades two hundred meters high. She does so by announcing the municipal administration’s support for the request for a public inquiry advanced by the “Friends of the Earth” association. An action that is the direct consequence of an agenda approved unanimously by the city council on May 30th, with which the mayor was given a mandate to take on this position.
The public inquiry is the procedure that is initiated to guarantee transparency and democracy in the processes that lead to the approval of certain measures. The issue of the many wind and photovoltaic installations that are multiplying throughout the province is closely linked to the protection of the landscape, but also of those fundamental economic sectors such as tourism and agriculture which in many cases risk being compromised.

“Just as we are doing with the appeal before the TAR against the expansion of the landfill – states Frontini – in the same way we intend to protect our territory from the unbridled proliferation of alternative energy plants in the province, which, as everyone well knows , already hosts 70% of these plants present throughout Lazio. The administration is represented by a civic majority and this makes the difference, because all our action is aimed at exclusively protecting the interests of citizens, without having to respond to any conditioning by the parties. The Municipality of Viterbo will always carry out this role of protection with determination, alongside those who do not want to see their territory turned upside down, but also in support of the other communities of Tuscia who can look to us as an ally. I thank the council groups and the city assembly for the united position they have taken on this issue of the new wind farm”.

At present, other projects have already been approved or are being implemented by the Region, both for wind farms and for ground-mounted photovoltaics which involve the territories of Viterbo, Montefiascone, Bolsena, the nearby Orvieto area, Celleno and Bagnoregio, a few kilometers away from the Valle dei Calanchi.
