Costa dei Trabocchi, the “surfer’s paradise” in Abruzzo at risk

To oppose the project of the new breakwaters, the Living Coast Committee and a fundraiser was organized. Furthermore, more than five hundred people protested online and in the streets in order not to see the “surfers’ paradise” disappear.

The breakwater project concerns the area of Vignola Cavea crescent-shaped bay that has remained practically intact since the times of Gabriele D’Annunzio who had a house right on the Portelle promontory.

In this area there is the so-called “point” of the Saracen: “point”, in surfers’ jargon, means an ideal spot for surfing, a place that should not be advertised from the rooftops to protect it and allow enthusiasts to dedicate themselves to surfing.

The Saraceno “point” allows rides of over 300 meters at a height of 2 meters: a magical place for those who know how to ride the waves. The place has now become public knowledge due to the looming project of new breakwaters in the area which puts the activities of the surfers.

What is the Costa dei Trabocchi

The Costa dei Trabocchi is a stretch of the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo which mostly corresponds to the coast of the province of Chieti: its name derives from the presence of trabocchi, the ancient fishing machines on stilts which date back to the 18th century.

The coastal strip starts to the north from the mouth of the Foro river, located between the municipalities of Ortona and Francavilla al Mare, and ends in the south at the mouth of the Trigno river. On the Costa dei Trabocchi the vegetation is very varied, with stretches of low, sandy beach and others of pebbles, often divided by cliffs.

It offers many surfing opportunities Sardinia and in particular the westernmost part of the island, where the sea is more open and offers high and exciting waves to ride. One of the most popular locations for surfers is Capo Mannu.
