In the end the Pef will have a minus sign. The Municipality of Latina managed to cut approximately 1 million euros from the economic and financial plan of the waste service for 2024, compared to the total for 2023. From over 36 million a year ago, it will move to a final figure of between 35,010,000 euros and 35,020,000 euros.

A small decrease compared to the very high figure reached in 2023, with an increase of 10 million euros compared to 2022, an increase then caused in part by the ISTAT increases and in the costs of raw materials, in part by the choice to spread the recovery on the PEF of a large part of the evasion of the Waste Tariff (TaRi), an operation not only permitted but also imposed by the regulations.

«The economic and financial plan must be approved by June 30th and for this reason we have to tighten the deadlines and we are holding many meetings to iron out everything. Next week it will go to the commission for examination and then approval, otherwise there won’t be time to bring it to the city council for final approval within the deadline”, explains the councilor for the environment, Franco Addonizio. The councilor explains that «we have found the solution. There are not the savings we thought (initially there was talk of being able to cut by around 2.5 million euros, but then we went back to the previous 36 million, not without disagreements on the part of the budget; now instead we are cutting by around 1 million of euros; ed.), but we managed to cut something. On the other hand, if we had cut too much, we would have been forced to give up many services, from sweeping to tidying up and cleaning of the city. In the end, therefore, there will be 1 million euros less.” A cut that should allow the current level of TaRi bills to be maintained, or even a minimal decrease.

«EVERYTHING NEEDS TO CHANGE»

After the PEF, it will be necessary to address the revision of the industrial plan of ABC (the company for common goods, which manages the waste collection and disposal service) which, according to Addonizio, «everything needs to be changed: the initial project to be reviewed in light of the door to door downtown; the service contract, to be adapted to the new rules. The current industrial plan did not foresee the historic center, it did not foresee sweeping, there was no number of kilometers to be covered and not even a forecast of the number of door-to-door passes. In short, it wasn’t adequate. We have to change everything.”

WHAT TO DO IN THE CENTER

An industrial plan that will have to resolve, once and for all, costs and methods of door-to-door arrival also in the historic center of Latina: the choice will be between smart bins in the street and condominium bins for large housing developments. This is because continuing with the tubs, in addition to crowding on the sidewalks, would have meant a significant increase in costs (and bills) due to the increase in personnel needed for the collection steps.

Addonizio does not specify, but, according to what we learn, the Piazza del Popolo administration would also like to initiate more stringent control over ABC. Not only because in the rooms of the Municipality, weeks ago, they would have jumped on their chairs at the profit of just under 1 million euros recorded by ABC and judged too high for a service company; but also because we would like greater efficiency in the use of company personnel.
