SULMONA. The offices of the former Pace barracks will be moved, by autumn, to the ground floor of the Masciangioli primary school but, for the students, they have to wait. For the ninth school year in a row the bell will not ring at Masciangioli.
As decided by the municipal council in recent months, the municipal offices will first enter the school building in Viale Mazzini and then, hopefully, the primary school students. To arrange the school premises which will house the municipal employees, the body has launched a tender procedure, inviting five companies. This is a contract worth 581 thousand euros. The assignment of the works will take place according to the criterion of the most advantageous economic offer. The transfer of the municipal cultural and social offices, located until now inside the Pace barracks, is due to various urgencies and needs that the Sulmona municipality, led by the mayor Gianfranco Di Piero, is facing. First of all, the request from the State Property Office to return the property located in the historic center.
Added to this are the improvement works that Palazzo San Francesco is undergoing, home to the remaining municipal offices not yet decentralized. The physical transfer of the offices, according to forecasts, will take place no earlier than September. The executive project was created by the company Sagi Srl, which also took care of safety coordination. The relocation of all the offices in via Mazzini will thus allow the safety work to also begin on Palazzo San Francesco, for which 1.3 million euros are currently available. Funds which are in reality insufficient, but which can be integrated by the special office for the reconstruction of Fossa. The Municipality has chosen, as an alternative location, the ground floor of the school which has recently been the subject of seismic adaptation interventions, still to be completed since the bell for students has not rung since 2016.
In fact, to be used by the school population currently housed in the Capograssi middle school, the building requires further work worth one and a half million euros. Work which will have to concern the arrangement of the external part, the creation of separate entrances, the connection of the heating and sanitary systems interrupted to cut the foundations and insert the insulators, the adaptation of the toilets.
A list of interventions for the implementation of which the Municipality will have to, in some way, find the necessary funds. All this in order to be able to reopen the building in via Mazzini also to students and not just to its employees. The first part of the renovation works of the historic school building, closed in 2016, ended in spring 2022. So far, 166 insulators have been placed in the foundations of the school building for an amount of 4 million euros.
