Ciofani’s words after Venezia-Cremonese: «The journey with the coach was extraordinary, Cremonese will start again»
After the defeat of Venicethe captain of the Cremonese Daniel Ciofani – with teary eyes – he showed up in the press room at the Penzo Stadium to comment on the performance and the season. Here’s what he said to the journalists present.
You were on the pitch for a long time before the match, you felt it a lot. Did you think it was your last final?
«No, it was just the last race of the season. Of a long and delicate season. I was looking for the right concentration, I often do these rituals of savoring the pitch, the fans, the temperature… You live on sensations, it was my seventh time in the playoffs between C and B, this is my fourth defeat. Sorry, but we’ll start again.”

«Cremonese will start again, Daniel Ciofani too. Now is not the time to talk about Ciofani. I’m very loved in the city, I let off steam by crying before. I was among the most lucid, I’m also the captain.”

«When the coach arrived we were eleventh, we made an extraordinary journey with him. If we want to look at Sudtirol and FeralpiSalò anyone is free to do so, but it doesn’t bring anything good. Tonight they missed the goal, they had two shots on goal: the goal and the late header by Bjarkason. They always tried to start again, both Thursday and tonight. I congratulate Venezia, but also Cremonese.”
If you had finished third, would it have been different?
«Venezia had the advantage in the rankings, yes. If we had finished third, we would have had a 51% chance, nothing more.”
You had noticed some positive signs.
«I live the city and I must tell you that I have always felt – even tonight from my friends, those who support Cremonese – the possibility of making it. Tonight I didn’t get the same feeling from Venezia, but they were more.”
You know this environment well, even today the fans supported to the maximum. Will Cremona and Cremonese start again?
«Absolutely everything is there to start again: I have won and lost matches throughout my career, there have been bitter defeats and exhilarating victories. After a knockout in Venice, the sun will always rise again. My career has shown this, this is sport and this is life. I am very confident that Cremo can shine again.”
Your assessment of this season: failure or not?
«The word “failure” is not part of my sport and my football vocabulary. We didn’t hit the promotion, but we tried until the last second of June 2nd. I’m in the last years of my career, being able to play in an event like this is priceless: the fans honored us even after the defeat with applause, as well as last year’s relegation. It’s unfortunate that we didn’t reach our goal, but it wasn’t a failure. In fact, I am very proud of what Cremo has done.”
