The Geo Barents disembarked in Salerno with 84 migrants on board: 20 were minors

Geo Barents lands in Salerno, the Doctors Without Borders ship that rescued 84 migrants in the Mediterranean Sea: after the authorization received from the Government, the ship arrived at the Manfredi Pier in the port of Salerno, after saving the lives of 84 people, including twenty minors. These are migrants mostly arriving from Sudan, Egypt, Ghana, Eritrea and Syria: all very poor countries and in some cases torn apart by civil wars that have lasted for decades, as in the case of Syria, where the war began in 2011 and it’s never over.

Of the 84 migrants on board, rescued in two separate operations in Libyan waters, twenty are minors, 19 of whom are unaccompanied, 2 are women. Their destination has already been decided: 38 will remain in the reception centers of the Province of Salerno, the others will instead be transferred to Calabria. This is the second Salerno landing this year in Salerno, the 34th overall. “There are no reported health problems on board”, say the Vopi volunteers, who also explain that “during the checks entrusted to the police, we will try to understand if among the people rescued there are also any smugglers”.

“There is a strange consonance of symbols: Republic Day on the one hand and at the same time this new wave of refugees on our docks”, commented the mayor Vincenzo Napoli this morning, who explained: “The Geo Barents ship has distinguished by a great operational capacity. We have acquired, as the city of Salerno, an important welcoming capacity. We know how to operate in these circumstances. We must welcome these people with solidarity our contexts. We also need manpower“.
