The situation in the main hospitals in the province of Arezzo is critical: dozens of nursing shifts remain uncovered, with prospects of imminent worsening with the arrival of the summer holidays.

Claudio Cullurà, territorial secretary of NurSind, the nursing professions union, raises the alarm. “The situation is very complicated and has been going on for several weeks,” says Cullurà. “I had reported the ongoing difficulties to the company during the last negotiation, but without success. Not even the request for local tables to discuss the situation was successful.”

Programming Problems and Staff Shortage

The lack of staff is a chronic problem that affects the entire Region, aggravated by the lack of organization and planning. Cullurà describes a paradoxical situation: “In the last few hours, in the emergency room of the Santa Maria alla Gruccia hospital in Montevarchi, nurses and social-health workers (Oss) did not know which shift they would have two days later.”

Inadequate Interventions and Temporary Solutions

Despite the company’s reassurances and the sending of some ‘last minute’ units, the situation in the various hospitals in Valdarno and the province of Arezzo remains critical. “The nurses on duty at the Casentino hospital were asked to carry out OSS tasks on several occasions,” continues Cullurà. “In the emergency room of the Montevarchi hospital, the company announced the sending of a nurse and an OSS to deal with the situation, but the shortage of staff is so serious that nurses are called back to the ward, using the additional productivity who usually operate in local clinics.”

The situation is no better in the emergency room of the Fratta hospital in Cortona, which is experiencing chronic difficulty.

The nursing emergency in the province of Arezzo is a combination of lack of staff and organizational deficiencies. With the arrival of the summer holidays, the risk of further worsening is real, putting a strain on the ability of the local healthcare system to provide adequate care. Health authorities are called to intervene promptly with structural and not just temporary solutions to ensure the efficient functioning of health services and patient safety.
