The ‘local’ angle on the PD secretary’s morning in Piazza Indipendenza does not come from Elly Schlein. The harshest words towards Nicoletta Fabio’s administration instead come from the Sienese dem commissioner Marco Sarracino.

“The city is already tired of the experience with the municipal right. I speak with many people who can no longer stand a council that is against the Pnrr, the Biotechnopole. This is something shocking: I’m against science.” And again: “They don’t follow a single labor dispute and are completely out of touch with reality. This is why we are here this morning: we are preparing to be an alternative and to rebuild a relationship with the city.”

Schlein, but it was logical given the approach of the European vote, instead concentrated on continuing her long-distance duel with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, with the Pnrr as the front of the conflict. “Meloni – said Schlein speaking to journalists – she continues to confirm herself as the queen of austerity. And the cuts that the government is making to the municipalities are very serious: 250 million. I consider the choice to cut more to those territories that are spending the most resources from the Plan to be enormously wrong,” she continued.

“With the Pnrr – he explained – the walls of nursery schools can be built. but with the cuts there will be no resources for educators.” And he continues: “We are extremely worried and we join the mayors who are denouncing this.”

Another workhorse is that of public health: “We will defend it tooth and nail. The executive is taking away resources without even having the courage to admit it. They are telling the photonic lie about the largest investment in health but their own numbers contradict them.”

Then the final attack: “Meloni in Spain, among those nostalgic for Franco’s dictatorship and among Trump supporters, attacked the left. He said let’s erase the identity. I remind you that, in a year and a half of government, you are canceling people’s freedoms” because “if you have a starvation wage to work you are not free in this country of ours. And if I have to be honest I say that we are proud of our identity, which is anti-fascist like our Constitution”, concluded Schelin.
