No challenge between the big names in the Sappada stage, won by Andrea Vendrame. There were climbs, but it was difficult to make a difference in this stage which also saw the breakaway take more than 15′ of advantage. The fall of Geraint Thomas, however, did not encourage the men in the rankings to make attack after attack. Everything postponed to the fraction of the double passage on the Monte Grappa which will certainly cause holes in the general, also because it will be the last in which gaps can be created given the final catwalk in Rome on Sunday. Around here Lucky won a great stage at the Adriatica Ionica Race: can it repeat like in 2021? The favorite remains Pogacar who has already won 5 stages and wants to conquer the sixth.

Alpago-Bassano del Grappa: the route
The show and puppets come to an end with the last mountain stage which takes the runners to Bassano del Grappa. I arrive on the plain, but this is the stage of the double passage on the Monte Grappa. We will certainly see attacks 30 km from the finish line or even before. Wavy start to the day with different teeth: the first GPM is that of Wall of Ca’ del Poggio (1.1 km at 11.7%) which could be a fundamental point to start the breakaway. There are no obstacles until the first step on Monte Grappa (18.1 km at 8.1%, peak at 17%), with the climb starting from Semonzo del Grappa. Descent and then you will climb the Pianaro (1.5 km at 9%, peak at 15%). Then a very steep descent to Romano d’Ezzelino and we start again from the beginning. From Semonzo del Grappa we start again with the second passage on Monte Grappadescent and second passage on Pianaro. Same descent as before up to Romano d’Ezzelino, then 5 km of flat terrain until the end of the hamlet in Bassano del Grappa.

The favourites
Last mountain stage of this Giro d’Italia. It’s true that there isn’t really an uphill arrival but, previously, the double passage on the Monte Grappa it should really make a difference. This is why there is little confidence that the escape to Bassano will happen. It will be a challenge between the big names and, inevitably, the number 1 favorite will always be him: Tadej Pogacar.
And the others? Daniel Martinez, Bardet And Tiberi they will certainly try to put their signature on this edition of the Giro. The Colombian must confirm second place ahead of Thomas, Tiberi the white jersey and 5th place ahead of Arensman. This in itself would be an achievement, but beating Pogacar? Only if the Slovenian doesn’t do the Cannibal. AND GeraintThomas? It is unlikely that he will activate the turbo at the end, even if there is still room to take 2nd place. We will also have to see his condition after Sappada’s fall.
Speaking of escapees, just to make a list, here are some Italians who will certainly go on the attack to win this stage. How can we forget the two very young people Giulio Pellizzariwho came close to us on Monte Pana, and Davide Piganzoli. We will definitely see them in action. And why not the same Domenico Pozzovivo at the last mountain stage of his career.

For this 2024 edition the organizers have maintained the prize money of past years, with the winner of the Giro d’Italia who will earn around 265 thousand euros, even if we are still very far from the prize money offered by the Tour de France. 11 thousand euros to the winner of each single stage, 20 thousand euros to the super fighter.
