Sannio, less work for foreigners: income of 7.5 million

The portion of income saved by foreign workers in the province amounts to 7.5 million euros Benevento and sent to their respective families in their country of origin. One million less than the 2022 amount, two million less than 2021. Analyzing the numbers, Sannio appears as the regional territory in which foreign work decreases the most. At the top of the destinations is Ukraine (1.3 million euros), followed by Romania (1.2 million) and India (430 thousand euros). All amounts decreased compared to last year.

However, remittances are increasing Pakistan, Georgia, Egypt, Colombia, Albania and Burkina Faso. Overall, there are 107 countries in the world reached by bank transfers from Sannio. This was revealed by a report from Bank of Italy, which collects and publishes official statistics on both incoming and outgoing remittances on a monthly basis. In the latter case, additional details are also provided on the country of the beneficiary and on the Italian province of residence of the sender. The published data shows the flows that pass through official intermediaries, such as money transfer operators, banks and post offices. It is curious to note how each province of Campania has a different ranking, which in turn is different from the national ranking, very often with some specificity which is the sign of a polarization.

In Italy the largest volume of money is that saved (and sent) by Bangladeshi workers (over one billion euros), followed by Pakistan, the Philippines and Morocco. In Sannio, however, the “podium” is different and sees Ukraine, Romania and India present. In the top ten there are Mali and above all Egypt, in the latter case with a strong increase in remittances, from 98 thousand to 229 thousand euros in one year. In Avellino (total remittances 16 million euros, stable compared to last year) the most indicated nations for transfers are Georgia (5.6 million euros), Ukraine (1.5 million) and Romania (1.2 million). Gambia appears in the top ten of Irpinia. The total sums originating from Caserta instead reaches 72 million euros, an increase compared to 70 million in 2022. The podium of the non-EU component in Terra di Lavoro includes India (10 million euros), Ukraine (6 million ) and Ghana (5.7 million). Also in the province of Naples (total 365 million euros, an increase of 3 million compared to 2022) Georgia is in first place (63.5 million euros), followed by Bangladesh (63.3 million) and Sri Lanka (53.8 million). In the latter case, the largest increase in remittances in a year was recorded together with Milan.

TO Salerno, however, the total reaches 86 million euros (stable compared to 2022) and the podium is made up of Morocco (16.3 million euros), India (15.4 million) and Georgia (11.3 million) in a ranking which also sees the presence of the Philippines. Each regional territory, therefore, has its own classification and is characterized by its own specificity. A story that repeats itself in reverse: what many foreign workers do is reminiscent of the flows that arrived in Italy from abroad in the 1900s, the result of the work of emigrants who then returned. A past that is not that distant after all: the Bank of Italy numbers reveal that the balance of Italy’s remittances has only become negative since the mid-1990s, when the amount of outgoing remittances, sent by an ever-increasing number of immigrant workers, often asylum seekers, has exceeded that of incoming remittances, a legacy of Italy’s history of emigration. Another relevant aspect concerns international labor mobility, which has meanwhile grown considerably in recent decades, thus determining an increase in the absolute value of remittance flows recorded at a global level.
