Ilaria Salis leaves prison: under house arrest in Hungary until the end of the trial

On the morning of Thursday 23 May, Ilaria Salis she left the Budapest prison where she had been detained for over 15 months. The 39-year-old teacher was transferred to the home of a private citizen in the Hungarian capital, where she will serve the precautionary measure of House arrest waiting for the end of the process.

The news was released by legal sources. The woman left the prison from a secondary exit to avoid cameras and journalists. The payment of the security deposit 40 thousand euros, the element necessary to get out of prison, has been carried out and at the third hearing scheduled for Friday 24th Salis will present himself with the electronic bracelet, which he will have to wear for the entire time he is in the designated home. Meanwhile, his lawyers Eugenio Losco and Mauro Straini have landed in Hungary. The request for house arrest was accepted on 15 May by the judges of the Hungarian court of second instance, after the rejection decided in a hearing on 28 March.

On that occasion his lawyers expressed satisfaction, but also underlined that “the battle continues”. The news was reported to the Chamber of Deputies by the Foreign Minister Antonio Tajaniwho explained how it was the result of “asynergistic action” in which both the government and the Italian embassy in Hungary took part. Satisfaction was also expressed by the head of Justice Carlo Nordio.

On March 20, the day the bail payment procedure began, the 39-year-old teacher gave an interview to Press in which it was said “victim of ainjustice” and argued that “history is on my side”. When she was asked whether or not she felt supported by the government, the woman replied “Rather not answer”. Ilaria Salis, candidate for the European elections with Green and left alliancealso stated that “If I am elected, I will ensure that those who find themselves in situations of injustice like mine are not left alone. I believe it is important to give visibility and voice to the world of prisons” and promised to give voice to the theme of “protection of fundamental rights of the person”.

Two days later, the teacher’s father Roberto Salis, seen by many as the “megaphone” of his daughter for the electoral campaign, ended up in the spotlight for having blurted out against the former senator of the Brothers of Italy Achille Totaro in the episode of ByTuesday.

When Totaro placed emphasis on the fact that the prosecution claims that the 39-year-old has attacked political opponents, Roberto Salis accused him of defamation and of saying “stupid which have no bearing on the trial documents”.
