«After Amadeus, no worries. I’m at a point in my career where I don’t have to prove anything, not to myself, not to the public, not to the company. If I do less than Amadeus it doesn’t matter, it’s not just a question of share; I will try to make a good product and a good service to the discography, this is the important thing”: says Carlo Conti the day after the announcement of his return as a great protagonist at the Sanremo Festival, chosen by Rai as host and artistic director of the event for 2025 and 2026.

In the first interview granted after the announcement, this morning to the microphones of Rtl 102.5, the 63-year-old Tuscan presenter explained how he will work in the coming months: «My family knows that I have made a life choice by retiring to Florence, a normal life in which I will find space to prepare the festival. The most important thing is to choose the right songs, because the songs must then enrich the radio programs and be in step with the times. My doubt was whether I had a ready musical ear after seven years. This is what’s important for Sanremo, the rest is secondary. Rules and co-hosts? It’s still very early, I haven’t gotten my head around it yet. It’s something that has come to fruition in the last week.”

Why he accepted

Conti reiterated the reasons that led him to accept the task entrusted to him by the management of Viale Mazzini: «We have made official something that has been in the air for a while. We were talking with the company and found a meeting point. I felt great affection around my candidacy from the entire company, from the top to the workers. So I said to myself: ‘let’s go back to the scene of the crime, the Conti are back’. The place? Sanremo is Sanremo, Ariston is fine. It’s a permanent fixture; I think it’s more important how it’s done and the songs that are there, rather than the place where it’s done.”

Then speaking about expectations, the host said: «It’s not important if I will do less in terms of share, otherwise after the big Baudo festivals we would have had to close Sanremo. Amadeus has done a great, extraordinary job, growing year after year both from a musical and audience point of view. I will try to continue that work. Many say that I started the process of rejuvenating Sanremo. In 2017, Ermal Meta, Gabbani and Mannoia were on the podium. The discography has changed a lot. The only medal I put on myself is that Mahmood, Irama, Ermal Meta, Francesco Gabbani, Enrico Nigiotti, Giovanni Caccamo started from my festivals. It was a moment of great rebirth of Italian music.”
